Sheriff's Department Oil

I just found out today and that my local Sheriff's Department uses the local Havoline quick lube. Each vehicle gets the oil type and grade specified in the owner's manual. In fact the PPV Tahoe the deputy I was talking to drives gets Havoline semi synthetic 0W-20. Do any of you know what your local law enforcement agencies are using?

Local township police department here uses Maxlife 5w30 in their stuff. Department at rental property place uses Quaker State Conventional 5w30

#9 is a aromatic gun bore cleaner and Rem oil is popular gun lube at least around here.

All our stuff goes to the local Ford dealer, no matter what make the vehicle is. Not sure how or why that came into being...

Our local department uses Mobil 1, or at least they say they do.

Oh OK. I'm not a gun guy so I thought maybe you were referencing a song or a movie. I was surprised to find out that they use different grades for the different vehicles. Makes me wonder what the state troopers use. I've heard the state police run their oil like 10K miles with a filter change at 5...or maybe it was oil for 5K with the filter for ten...

When I was at the county sheriffs office three years ago, we took our cars to the Ford dealership every 5000 miles. Whatever oil the dealership used I have no idea. For top off oil, they kept a case of Napa conventional 5w30 in the office. My car used at least a quart of oil per 5000 miles. It idled a lot and was driven hard though.

Our vehicles have a 5,000 mile OCI mandated as well. The way some of them are treated I think that's too long. Is it weird to feel bad for some of the vehicles? lol

Yes, our police cars are mostly new Chevys and Fords. We go by the book and the new chevys get the correct DEXOS spec oil.

Carquest Full Synthetic fits the bill for Dexos and pricepoint.

Last city I worked at used bulk Chevron for all their vehicles.
5w30 for gasoline, 15w40 for diesels.

I think it I was over it I would compromise and just use an HDEO like Delo XLE 10w30. Would fit the bill for pretty much anything in a municipality's fleet.

Recently was looking over a owner's manual for 2011 Chevy Cruze, and it specifically said "DO NOT USE OILS LIKE 10w30, 10W-40, 15w40, 20W-50". I know, it's not a police car, but many companies and rental agencies have fleets of Cruzes... I never saw any manufacturer warn the owners in such way... How much harm can be done?

I worked for a small municipal PD. We contracted with a local repair shop for our vehicle maintenance. Our Crown Vics got whatever bulk oil the repair shop used. I believe it was 15w40 but I'm not sure of the brand. Our cars went a lot of miles with no engine related problems. I've since retired but they are still driving a few of those Crown Vics.

Our State vehicle guidelines are filter change every other time unless some circumstances require different approach. 6,000 miles oil - 12,000 miles filter across the board - police and trooper vehicles included.

Most go to the dealers because they offer lube programs that are nearly as cheap as JiffyLube, etc. And because they are in the "system" to be checked anytime an auto-inspector needs to review the records before approving a repair. Most dealers have bulk oil contracts that meet OEM specs, so that what they get. MotorCraft oils get used a LOT ...

I have a bottle of #9 that came in a Hoppe's gun cleaning kit(.22) that I purchased 49 years ago at a Gibsons in Alamogordo,NM. Do you think the #9 is still usable? I don't shoot anymore so don't know if it would clean a barrel. Kit itself is like new.
