my wife and i joined bjs whole sale club today.while i was looking in the auto dept.i saw shell synthetic oil for about twenty three dollars for six quarts looking on the internet i cannot find any info on it.does anyone here have any?

I'd like to know as well. Did you go to the BJ's in Massena? Their gas is top notch. I always get a few more miles per tank with them.

IMO....Formula Shell Full Synthetic is a high quality synthetic oil, that is hard to find at retail establishments. I'm currently using FS Full Synthetic in a blend with Shell Rotella T-6 and have no complaints about the oil.

There are a couple of UOA's on the board by members using FS. One of the users of FS, Odie, should be able to help you more for use in your car.

Shell is trying to position the products in this order.

1. Pennzoil Ultra

2. Pennzoil Platinum

3. QuakerState Ultimate Durability

4. Formula Shell Synthetic

A matter of debate how much practical difference their is in most vehicles.

That was the primary reasoning that I used when I blended Formula Shell Full Synthetic with Shell Rotella T-6......IMO they look like, or are, very similar.

Here is the MSDS for Shell Rotella T-6.....they look like the same base oil used in each product.

http://www.epc.shell.com/Docs/GSAP_msds_00051969.PDF

To me that says Group 4, or a Synthetic on a European evaluated product.

Looks like I may have to buy a few cases.

It's a nice store, too bad about the mall though. If it weren't for JCPenny and Sears I think it would close.

bj's pretty routinely offers $9 off shell oil in their monthly coupon book, I'd say, maybe, once every 3-4 months.

Before we try to determine base stock based upon an MSDS, I'd like you to check something else from that same site where you pulled the MSDS. Check the Formula Shell PDS. Then check the Formula Shell Synthetic PDS. Do you see any differences? I don't. Their data sheets are in absolute disarray and I wouldn't put the slightest bit of trust in any of them right now.

I'd suggest checking pour point to see if that might point to or away from Group IV. However, that would require checking the PDS. Aside from that, considering that PP and PU aren't Group IV oils, I'd find it hard to believe that FSS is.
