Hey guys, anybody with knowledge of this gear oil.
I've found a few articles that states if your the kind of person who changes gear oil on a schedule that regular Dino is the way to go.
Any thoughts ???
Thanks

I've used a bunch of it over the years with good results. Both in passenger cars and light trucks and also in heavy duty over the road trucks. Shell makes good products, use the Spirax, it will give you good service.

I use Spirax HD 80W90 in both 240 diffs. It meets the SAE J2360 spec which is all I care about. 20,000 mile OCI. Never had an issue.

Thanks for the good info
I'm seriously thinking about running 85W-140 this summer and then a drain and fill with 80W-90 during winter months

What is your vehicle specification?

I can only vouch for the Spirax synthetic gear oil. I used it in the gearbox and rear diff of an Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce, and it noticeably smoothed out the shifts, especially second gear.

Why would you run a Spirax HD such a short duration ? It does hundreds of thousands miles in trucks, granted on bigger fill volume .
85W140 is good up to -12*C and above, are you below that in winter ?

My rear diff holds 3.5 quarts and I log around 25K a year
And doing routine mantainence is sorta my hobby I guess you could say. So know big reason other than I like working on my truck and maintaining it for the long haul

Ok, I see your point and your truck diff will last like forever.
Btw I consider a J2360 PRF 2105E as sort of a grade higher than normal GL5 in terms of components protection, splitting hairs I suppose.

It's a feel good thing I suppose, but my FF gear oil seems a little weak to me . Has more clunk in the diff than I've ever noticed before in other Ford trucks
So a change is also an experiment sorta

I think more than splitting hairs. SAE J2360 would appear to be an improvement over GL-5:

Where do you buy it? The only place I've ever seen it for regular consumer purchase was a shell gas station, in a five gallon bucket, maybe four years ago or so.

Pep boys and your local Shell distributor.

Valvoline, Castrol, Kendall, Mobil, Havoline, Gulf etc. are just as good and meet the SAE J2360 spec. Don't over think this.

I bought it at a Shell Distributor, they stock in quarts and 5 gallon buckets. Do you have a Shell Distributor close to where you live?
