Both seem to be "lower" quality than their company's known brands (Pennzoil and Mobil 1), and both are cheaper by the quart than major name brands. Are they "inferior" by much or are just cheaper because they are sold by the company that actually makes the oil?

Just wondering.

Actually, Mobil Clean 5000 is the "better" of the Exxon-Mobil conventionals. Mobil 1 is a synthetic, but Exxon-Mobil's lower offering is actually Exxon Superflo which you can get at places like AutoZone and Mobil Clean 5000 is a step above that. Formula Shell and Mobil Clean 5000 aren't inferior, I would trust either of them to go 5,000 miles and I do run Exxon Superflo and/or Mobil Clean 5000 for 5,000 miles in one of the cars I maintain with no problems at all.

When your talking about the top tier oils (i.e. Pennzoil, Quaker State, Castrol, Mobil 1, etc) about 30% of the price has to do with promotional activities (i.e. advertising and supporting a racing program). Nothing wrong at all with the Formula Shell and Mobil conventional oils.
