A chain it is...noisy sucker as well....the Ecotech is not a quiet engine.....but seems to be a pretty well built one. I expect a lot of parts (A/C, power window motors, heated seat elements, radio etc) to bomb out before the Ecotech gives me any issues...I think it is one of the best engines that GM has ever put out

Seriously guys...I can't think of an easier engine I have had to change the oil

What were you using before?

2 Previous UOA's were Mobil 1 0W30 and 5W30 Pennz Plat before that 1...off top of my head I can't recall the others but do a search as I posted them

The 2.0, 2.2, and 2.4 have a timing chain.
The smaller Ecotec engines do not.

Heck, I bought this engine BECAUSE it used a chain. So did my dad. We saw what a snapped belt did to mom's 1985 Nissan Maxima VG30E.

Timing belts... Expensive to replace, ultra expensive to let fail.

hmmm... Costco here in Ottawa has Shell Formula (5 and 10w30) 12 x 1 litre cases for $22.99 I believe. Heck, I have yet to find any oil cheaper then that, even dino on sale at CT. Might have to switch at that price, and with the results I've seen this oil pump out

Its now up to $27.99 for 12 5W-30, and 26.99 for 10W-30...works out to about $2.33/liter for the 5W-30. That price is better than most oil sales you can get, as webfors mentioned! It's really an amazing price, when you consider the results this oil delivers.

I've got a Costco membership that I don't use much, and I'm seriously thinking of grabbing a case of the 5W-30 and calling it a day....a case would last me a year, changing it every 4 months and 5-6k miles....

Anyone know how Formula Shell version SN stacks up to their previous SM offering with respect to quality of add packs ?
