Just need some opinions here. Does anyone know the general shelf life of oil filters? I was thinking about buying enough filters for about two years of oil changes. The filters in question are Nippon filters with silicone ADBV's. A very nice filter by the way, not to mention only $2/piece.

Thanks

Two years is fine you won't have any problems as long as the filters are stored in a weather friendly area away from moisture.

On my old Dodge 318 I'm using a supply of K-mart oil filters that are about 15 years old. When they closed that store they had them marked down to about ten cents apiece; I think I purchased 63 of them.

So far no rust/corrosion, as Buick92 said just keep em in a dry environment away from any moisture. I have mine in a big cardboard box on a shelf in my shed.

There is a lot of speculation on this subject. Could you give us a solid answer by cutting open the next one you take off and letting us know how it looks?

Don't you just love it when these kinds of opportunities come along?

Will do, labman. Hopefully I'll have a new digital cam by then, too and I'll post the pics.

I just bought 4 AC Delco PF44's at the garage sale. They wanted $1/ea but I worked them down to $.50/ea for all 4.

I'm hoping shelf life is at least a few years because I also have another 3 in stock so that brings my supply to about 2-3 years worth of filters.

I've used a FRAM Allied Signal 3614 filter from 1994 recently for 4500 miles.

I cut it apart, the filter has no degradation. It was stored in it's box on a high shelf in my garage with little humidity.

I bought some STP-47 Double oil filters (80's vintage) at a "junk" store. This place has all kinds of oddball stuff, firearms, ammo, pink flamingo's off brand food... Anyway The filters are fine, and they were only a buck apiece. I also got some Shell Fire and Ice for .79 a quart, so my last two changes have cost me about 5.00 each. They also had Casite filters for 2.00 each, and some Champ's for a buck. I would think the shelf life of filters would be very long unless exposed to high humidity, or possible adhesive failure after many, many years. The filters I have are surely approaching 20 years old, and look like new.

I think I have you guys beat. I just installed the second Sears Spectrum oil filter for my mother's 01 Sable. They were the same size as the specified FL-820. Both filters were on my garage shelf for 22 years.

And where was said filter kept? Indoors or out in the garage or shed? That's pretty amazing considering even tires have a shelf life.

I know someone who spent over $50 to buy an new original stock (NOS) AC Delco oil filter for a 1969 Camaro Z28. It had to be date coded before the build of the car and that was sometime in 1968. He was restoring the car and wanted everything exactly like it was when it came from the dealer. He spent over 50g on the car, drove it 5 miles and now trailers it to car shows. He has been offfered a lot of money to sell it.

Documented 1969 Z29 Camaros are worth a lot of $$..

So for some of the classic cars of the 1960's, a original filter would be worth some $$.

Like I said, the filter was kept in the garage (no rust).

If you remember, I also posted in the tire forum about running the tires on my 71 Cutlass for 19 years until they wore out. I wouldn't do it again. The tires were badly cracked between the threads, and the was a small bubble between the plies where there was some delamination.
