I know that oil gets thinner the longer you run it. Example 5w30 becomes a 20 weight after X amount of miles. But has there ever been a test to show if the 20 weight is actually 0w20. So in other words the 30 weight thinned out to a 20 weight at operating temp. (195). And the 5w thinned out to a 0w at whatever temp. (xxx) not sure.

5W30 will not thin to a 0W20. More likely would be 10W20, but I dont know of any testing to show what actually happens to the winter rating after use, though I think that would be a good idea.

I'm under the impression that it shears initially, then the oil is distilled with the thinner molecules eventually volatilizing and the oil thickening into a monograde oil after a long, long while. IIRC

That makes perfect sense because as the VII's wear out they can no longer keep the oil thin.
