When my car is idling it vibrates a bit, when i turn on the rear defogger the vibration increases, the rpm drops and the hood starts to rattle. My battery is not weak. Does anyone have any ideas?

Make? Model? Year? Engine?

From your description ..I'll say a 4 cylinder that barely has enough power to idle anyway. You hit the defogger ..and the alt drag is enough to upset its delicate balance.

How's the belt and belt tensioner??

1997 Honda Accord 4 Cyl Non Vtec...
My alt belt is tight with one inch to move.
Wat is the tensioner and how can i check that?

I have a 96 Accord LX, 2.2L non-vtec. I had the same problem. However, mine just vibrates a little and then idles normally. It was a little worse before a tune-up. My plugs were baaadd...

It also happens when I down the window. But it gets a little shaky and then goes back to normal. My Accord was in the shop in Nov for a tuneup and check over, and they said all it needed was a tuneup. The shaking has been better since. It doesnt do it as noticably. You have to pay attention or you will miss it, before the tuneup you would feel it.

My '95 Accord 4-cyl V-TEC vibrates at idle with the A/C on. Somebody on here mentioned that his Accord from the same era does the same thing.

mine.^

check the computer for stored codes.

have the alt. checked to see if it's putting out enough juice.

if your hood rattles, that's bad. do the rpm's normalize after a few seconds or do they stay low? might want to see if the IAC is bad or needs cleaning. have you checked your hoses to see if you have a vacuum leak?

clean your throttle body.

also, have the engine mounts checked.

another thing you can do is adjust the idle speed. that helps a lot.

too bad our cars aren't like my friend's celica. when you turn on the a/c it stops shaking. it feels as though it's counter rotating, thus eliminating the vibration.

how to clean TB?
the rpm does not normalize, it stays low...

well your IAC could need replacement or cleaning.

to clean the TB, you have to carefully disconnect everything from it, remove it from the engine, cover the sensors and spray it with a good TB cleaner and use a toothbrush on the really dirty areas. make sure it's completely dry before reinstalling. if any gaskets or hardware look bad, replace them.

also getting a service manual, haynes or the factory version will help a lot.
