I recently got a bunch of copper scraps as a trade. Tubing end cut offs and thick sheet scrap, about 100lbs, all of it shiny clean copper. Current copper price according to metalprices.com is $3.92 for copper.

I've never sold scrap metal before. Does anybody actually buy it at that price?

Or for that matter, can I buy scraps of other type of metals for those prices anywhere?

You won't get the current market price for scrap, but you'll make OK out of it. (40km of signal wire was stolen from the railway near here a little while ago, and the log of my company was stolen off the front gates the other day until they realised it wasn't copper.

Sold a broken Alloy BMW sump, a holed block, and a crankshaft for $19 earlier this year.

How much do the scrap yards usually pay compared to the market price? Do they resell scrap at the market price?

There's a ton of idiots over here stealing anything that might be metal. The morons keep cutting up worthless fiber optics.

Been sent a few photos of guys who have tried stealing live high voltage stuff...it's really not pretty, as you can't see electricity, only the effects.

Depends on the scrap, on what they will pay you.

Al cans are very uniform, and a known thing. You get a known price.

If you've got an indication on what the scraps are, and of they are consistent, you'll get a better price than a general pile of yellow metal.

Not sure on the price of virgin materials to scrap ratio...ask me in October.
