So I'm cleaning my bookshelves and have quite a few books that I no longer need. On Amazon, some of them sell for $0.01 plus $3.99 shipping.

It doesn't seem to be worth doing that since most of the time the media mail is more than $3.99 and a shipping container is at least $1 for a padded envelope.

Why would anyone sell a book for that price even if it was a donated book with $0 basis?

Goodwill sells books for a few bucks each. Then after a few weeks they get marked down to half off. Then the following week they go down to .50 each. So you may just want to donate them to clear the space asap.

I have some books on Amazon and my minimum is $5.00 regardless of the other prices on Amazon.

If you donate you should be able to take off on your taxes what it would cost at a used bookstore.

Because it doesn't cost that much to ship. I have bought dozens of used books from Amazon, and the postage is usually between $1.25 and $2. Last one I got (no padded mailer, hardback) had about $1.65 in postage on it. Even if you DO use a padded mailer, I'm sure they aren't $1 each when bought by the pallet!

Actually, many Goodwill stores sell on Amazon! (I have gotten several from King County Goodwill, which seems to get the Seattle library system's discards.)

I was a book seller on Amazon (as a business) for a number of years and made an average of $400 a month a number of years ago.

I would purchase books at garage sales, library's and many other places that sold used books. One key is to find books in very good to near new condition (no tears, writing or folded pages), . The books that garnered the most money were college text books (under 5 years old), non-fiction books, and technical volumes. Popular novel and novels in general are just about worthless. I once bought a book a my local library for a few dollars and sold it for close to $100. If you can find newer text books for $5 or less, you can sell them for anywhere between $35 to $60, sometime more.

There is a website (addall.com) that lists just about all books and what various sellers are asking for. As far as mailing, you use "Media Mail" (the cheapest way to go) or...if they want it fast, you would use "Priority Mail" which the customer would pay extra for. Mailing supplies can be purchased in bulk fairly cheaply. Get a postage service and a scale, so you can print your postage on your computer printer. When mailing, most of the time I would cover the book in a very thin foam material, and then use brown wrapping paper to mail it. Make sure the jacket cover is clean (you can purchase a cleaner that removes labels and glue).
