At the age of 78 and being financially good (not wealthy) this method is not for everyone.

I did this with a '16 Spark, '19 Crosstrek, and '22 Forester. If I am still alive, next up will be a'27WRX.

My '22 needed tires- I buy top end tires so $1300+, CVT oil change (+400), Walnut blasting in the 1 year future. Also the Basic warranty. Its hard to put a price on that. So all in all this method keeps me with new vechicles, latest safety and zero repairs.

Why am I posting this? BC its an exciting saturday nite.

Would it be cheaper to lease and not have to worry about what you will get for the used one.

When I was 18 I worked for a Pontiac Buick Dealer. We had a customer who traded in his car as soon as it needed a muffler. That was often the first thing to go and was after maybe 2 - 3 years in those days.

Different strokes.

I just might do that with the Tesla. I like the white interiors and Model 3s look really good in red.

Just kidding - at 8,000 km (5,000 miles) a year this car might outlast me.

With as strong as resale values have been since the early 2010's, I think this is a wise move.

Why not let Al choose how he wants to live his life?
I’m not, just playing a devil’s advocate to the people who are responding to the people trying to tell him how to live his life. That’s why I quoted someone else and not Al. Al can do whatever he wants; it doesn’t affect me at all. Unless he and I are relatives. Then I’m going to need you to be more frugal, Al.

You are right that servicing costs have gotten out of hand, and stealerships will go for all the wallet flushes they can get away with, so you might not be costing much more if you trade in every 5 years when the drivetrain warranty is up... Or you need to get a good honest indy mechanic and have a simpler car that doesn't have too much to go wrong with it.

Had a coworker who did this. Her logic was that she'd either be making car payments or paying for post-warranty repairs and she'd rather have the car payment.
