Self propelled mower. Gas or electric?

Americans have been waking up to the sound of a Briggs and Stratton flat head engine on a bright Saturday morning for nearly 70 years. Stephen Briggs and his buddy Harold Stratton changed the way the world took care of their lawns and gardens.

For the sake of all things that are good in this world, buy the gas powered mower. Things might have been different if they called their brand "Stephen & Harold" but I think the impact would have been the same.
I look at mowers sometimes just to capture in my head how many pretend they replaced name brands with some super duper in house motor …
Good luck pronouncing who actually made it (for less) …

I am now deep into the electric mower rabbit hole. Many Youtube videos watched and I'm going through a process of elimination.

Since the impetus for this purchase is for my wife to be able to mow while I am laid up after surgery, the Honda is out. I looked at the Ryobis at HD and I was not impressed so Ryobi is out too.

I know. The two mowers that I had narrowed it down to are out of consideration. What now?

Greenworks or Ego.

The Greenworks has a steel deck that I like versus the plastic Ego deck but the side/rear discharge on the Ego looks better. I can buy the Ego at my local Ace store and it's nice having a local shop that can service what they sell and I can talk to a real person.

Well, EGO also markets a 22" Self-propelled bagger w/Aluminum Deck, which is currently $999 on-sale at Lowes, or $250 more (w/sale pricing) than the plastic deck, but you're also getting a 10 Amp battery, which retails itself for $499, and will have a long run time:

At least now the high-lift blade ($50) is included now, unlike in years past.

If you are set on electric I'd go makita XGT coupled with a pair of 8AH batts. It's also got a steel deck, but is substantially lighter than the ego, and one handle height adjustment, and folds flat against a garage wall.

This way you get an equivalent or superior mower, and invest in a fantastic top shelf ecosystem that has tons of upside to cover all your other yard and tool needs.

I dont think ACE is going to do anything but a swap out, but maybe not.

Rwd, low CoG, weight, speed control, and traction would be my first concerns for hill mowing, then fuel type.
In the 90's I used to mow near half an acre of steep hill with a few trees scattered on it, for a neighbor with his snapper self propelled and it was a work out as a fit teen. I almost rolled it a couple times as the 4 stroke motor is rather heavy and high up compared to the 2t lawnboy pusher I used on my other lawns and did some steeper ditches with it.

Your wife might use an electric mower as they really are smooth and easy. But Ryobi is not the best choice. EGO is really good. And the better Toro’s

If you have decided on electric instead of gas, you should take a close look at the Greenworks 80V model sold at COSTCO. It is currently $599, but was on sale for $499 last month. It might go back on sale for the 4th of July. EGO mowers are nice, but cost $200-300 more for similar performance.

COSTCO has a very generous return policy if you are not satisfied with the mower.

My variable-speed (dial) self-propelled 7.5A-hr battery EGO rear-bagger has no issue with hills (my front lawn), and can easily mow my just under half-acre with at least half the charge remaining (using the optional high-lift blade), especially during the drier summer months.

When not rear-bagging, it has both a plug for mulching, along with a dedicated mulching blade, and a side-discharge chute, which I've never used.

Oh, and if mowing at dusk, it has headlights for additional visibility.
Same here, I only mulch, but the mower came with three blades.
I love the mower though the 7.5 battery did fail by the start of the second year and in record time EGO sent a new one to me at no cost.

With any of these machines, make sure to register it online, it will most likely have you enter the mower and the battery serial numbers. I would also take a photo of those serial numbers as well.

The only electric mower I would ever consider besides EGO is what @loneryder posted above. Greenworks is at the top of reviews and sometimes better than EGO in consumer reports. The Costco deal is sweet and I wouldn’t give it a second thought. However, I got a good deal on the.EGO as well two years ago. I can’t remember what I paid but I think it was 599 and it was the mower with the three different blades for your cutting style. Also concern was how long the battery warranty was, the EGO came with a three year warranty. I’m not sure about the other.
With the above, said, the OP has not mentioned how big his property is or at least I haven’t seen it. Our house is on a 60 x 150 lot. If it was much bigger, I would consider gas.

I had to post my silly pic again. My Toro 60V mower being charged by a 2 stroke HF generator. I tried to capture the very slight 32 to 1 exhaust smoke, but it just would not show up in the pic. Takes quite a bit of gas to charge the battery!

On a serious note, I love this mower. Steel deck, gobs of power, super quiet, light and uses a conventional blade. It will easily do 1/4 acre. I have 2 acres, but not that much lawn. The EV mower is for around the house. The garden tractor for the lawn.

OP said in Post #1 that their property was one acre. That's why I initially suggested the Honda gas mower over a battery powered mower.

Done.

We bought the Ego from our local Ace store. It was on "sale" with a free second battery. Wifey is happy and that's what matters.

To clear up the property size discussion, we have 15 acres but only about one acre is mowed grass. I use our old Deere L110 garden tractor for most of the mowed area but there are steep and congested areas that are easier to mow with a walk behind. Here is the first picture...

The first thing I did was to hook up the charger. I plugged it in through my kill-o-watt meter out of curiosity and it was drawing over 500 watts!

Very nice. The EGO mowers are excellent. What size batteries did you get, 7.5AH?

By the way, that's an awesome looking home!!!! My dream is a log home. May never happen, considering the string of unfortunate events lately. But I can still hope. I had a log home in PA some time back and absolutely loved it.

Thanks, we love it. Regarding the batteries, it came with a 7.5 and a 5.0 ah.

My 40v 20 or 21" push mower from Ryobi is a janky piece of plastic(this is the 300$ model).......and we have enjoyed the lack of noise and smell for 3 years. Electric is great if it fits your needs.

I bet you will like the EGO.

Look for a well kept Used 10 to 15 year old Toro with a Briggs Quantum or Honda engine. Depends where you live you may get it for anywhere between 100 and 250. It may last the rest of your life if you store it inside and do the basic maintenance. I think Hondas are nice but over priced for what they are. Now that they have the plastic decks they are will last a life time if you do the basic maintenance. If you are dead set on Electric look at the Toro. Toro really understands grass cutting and mulching better than anyone and their deck and blade systems are designed to produce Excellent results. Replacement parts are not an issue with Toro. You can not be sure with Honda as they have gotten out of the ICE mower business.

I have been happy with EGo since 2016.

The battery is not going to discharge faster on hillsides as one post claimed.

The plastic deck has held up perfectly and weighs about half what a metal deck mower weighs. Think that would be very important to your wife. And to your new knee(s).

After experimenting during the new-mower honeymoon I left the mulching plug in the discharge chute and mostly forgot where I put the grass bag. Mulched ever since no matter how high the grass. Having said that there were a few times I bagged just to have clippings to put on spots of bare dirt.

Greenworks is OEM for many other brands such as Bad Boy. I hear a lot more complaints about genuine Greenworks batteries failing than of EGo. IIRC most EGo batteries are warranted for 5 years if one registers shortly after purchase. YMMV, make sure this is the deal you are getting.

Congratulations on your purchase. I think EGo was the right choice.

EGo goofed with that SP speed control ring in the middle of the hand grip on the handle. My 2016 has a nice lever on the left. Have used friend's newer EGo with the goofy SP speed control as shown and totally hated it. Have since seen better designs on newer EGo models in the store but haven't mowed with one.
