selection of larger filter

Hi, I am new to the site and what a wealth of info.
2002 Explorer V6 uses 5w30 mobil 1 and calls for FL820S or a Bosch 3410 (What I am currently using).
Where do I look to see if a larger filter is available fo this application?
 
1) Don't assume that a larger filter is necessary. The engine maker designs that filter for a reason, and we don't know most of the details.

2) All the filter makers will tell you to use their filter that they've designed to match the engine maker's spec. They must have a reason for saying this, but, again, we don't know most of the details.

3) You can match your filter's bypass pressure setting, thread, gasket size, and room for installation to find a larger filter...but we don't know if there are any filtering capabilities that we lose.

Ken, i agree the current filter is adquate just like the recommended Conventional oil is OK.
If you could add a larger filter you would get more filter surface, less pressure drop, more oil storage capability and more filtering efficiency. All this assumes the same filter manufacturer of cause.
What I was looking for was where that information might be available, a source of reference.
 
Filters are not very complicated. If the threads and gasket fit and there is enough room for it a big filter will work better because the bigger the surface area of the filter the less stress. With the correct viscosity oil your relief valve won't open in a big filter.
I ran into a similar situation with my Motor Guard M-30 submicronic bypass filters. They can filter well below 1/10th micron. I know that they wil do even better with a PermaCool sandwich adapter because the stress on the element is reduced. I know two M-30's in parallel wil beat one. How about six in parallel. Where do you stop? Instead of filtering one qt a minute I could install a needle valve and throttle it to one qt per hour. Not too many years ago Ford's were all 3/4 - 16 treads with 2 3/4 OD gaskets. The same as VW's, Toyotas, Nissans, Volvos, Chryslers, etc. I adapted my Honda road bike to take a Motor Craft FLIA. I screwed a FLIA on to my little 4 cylinder 87 Toyota Pickup. My 4 cylinder Camry has the 2 1/2 OD gasket. There was no reason to go to 2 1/2 OD gaskets.
I sent a M-30 to a guy with a new Chevy 6.0 L Denali. He uses Amsoil 0-30. He will be installing a universal PermaCool adapter. He will plug the stock relief valve in the filter mount and screw on a Ford filter. Probably Amsoil. For that I sent him an ATF filter with an element bypass. The element bypass orifice will let the M-30 heat up faster in cold weather. Probably not that important with Amsoil 0-30. What he is doing is converting to a system where the relief valve in the adapter bypasses the oil to the full flow filter instead of the stock Chevy relief valve bypassing the oil directly to the engine without being filtered. PermaCool doesn't put a relief valve in the engines that have the relief valve in the block. The ATF or lube oil using the PermaCool adapter. How's that?
I'm a filter man not an oil man. People that use expensive oil are usually good at taking care of their equipment. I don't know how using Amsoil with a factory oil cooler will affect his filter change interval. I'm sure he will work it out.
