I did an oil change on a friend's 02 Merc Sable with the 24V motor. I did it a while back and used Motorcraft FL800s and chevron 5w20.
so my friend decided she needed another oil change at 2200 miles, against my advice of leave it alone till 5000... so she goes to sears, and what's done is done.
So she asks me to do another oil change because she's at 3000 miles. So I goto Walmart, and get a motorcraft FL800S and 6 quarts of motorcraft 5w20, just to keep things original out of boredom. (they didn't have any maxlife 5w20 anyway).
So I get the oil out, and the filter.. well it was overtightened, of course. the drain plug POPPED when I got it loosened up. No threads stripped tho!
So I get the filter loose. Not 1 drop of oil drips down or even out of it. I got it out and inside was empty.
the filter sits facing up, so it should've had oil in it.
the insides were wet so I know was in there at some point.
the filter was branded profilter, never heard of them.
the p/n was: L24651, which is a purolator number, but the filter size itself was easily 3/4" shorter than the FL850S, but it fit, and didn't leak so that was good.
I'm guessing from the p/n of the profilter, it was a purolator hybrid. I know the purolator's aren't that short to begin with.
Needless to say, the mystery to me.. why was there no oil sitting in that filter? the level was only 1/2qt low before I emptied the pan.

strange. was the FL-820S you got the new short style or the older tall style?

o and be very careful with that oil pan. when the plug strips it 99% of the time takes the pan with it.

I've seen that before on those engines. In order for oil to leave the filter it must be pushed through it by more oil, or be drawn out by gravity. I'd bet the adbv was just about non functional at that point.

can always re-thread the pan with the special thrading bolts, had to do it to my uncles 94 wrangler.

I never knew there was a new fl820S design.. hope they keep the longer version tho..

makes sense about the adbv being bad, i've never seen that before tho

It has been my observation the manufacturers keep fiddling with the designs. All the more likely with Purolator's new ownership. Even the infamous string is gone from some of them.

I have two ProLine (made by Purolator) PPL-30001's for a Ford application and one is larger than the other. The larger one is slightly older. In other words, some of Purolator's filters are getting smaller.

nope, the short one is the latest and greatest according to Ford. Mazda made the switch before Ford.

we refuse to due to liability on future oil changes.

I haven't seen any of the longer ones in months...I think if you find any, it'll be "old stock". I've still got 3 left and even though I'm sure the new ones are fine, I know I'm going to have the heebee-jeebees the first time I have to screw one on...

Don't assume anything based on filter #s, there are lots of Fram #s on champion walmart filters and many other places.

A good start is checking out the baseplate hole design; purolator has slightly ovalled rectangles on lots of stuff.

Sears more than likely buys them for about $1.50 each from the same guy who bulk fills their tank.
