for some applications, it is helpful to have an airtight seal on the threads of the brake bleeder valve. I was thinking about using silicon vacuum grease. Any other suggestions of something 'better'?

Speedbleeder sells a sealer for that purpose. Vacuum bleeding will pull air through the threads into your caliper/cylinder.

Just about any thread sealer can be used. The pre-applied, wait until it dries, type is pretty common. Hylomar, Vibraseal, Loctite, 3m....are some companies worth looking into. Loctite should be pretty common in most hardware and autoparts stores.
