Seafoam in your oil?

I have always heard that adding a table spoon of seafoam to your oil before an oil change is a good way to clean the engine. Is their is any truth to this or not? Is their even point in doing this since I run Royal Purple which already seems to function as a pretty good cleaner?

I think around here, you'll get an overwhelming response but it won't be for Seafoam (not that it's bad, but it's not the best option).

Check out Auto-RX. Numerous people have had much success with this product.

A tablespoon? You have got to be kidding, who told you that? What do you think a tablespoon of Seafoam will do in 5 quarts of oil or even in 4 or 3? Seafoam isn't magic dust, it's not Plutonium. A tablespoon of it won't do anything except maybe if you put it on a rusty bolt that you're trying to loosen.

Do a search on Seafoam and read some of the previous threads, lots of good info. Seafoam is discussed quite a bit around here. If you still have questions about it you'll have a better idea of what to ask.

A teaspoon of Seafoam will not "help the medicine go down"... ha ha

Really, you sould dump in half a can in the crankcase, and then suck the other half can through the vac line into the combustion chambers to decarbonize them. After you finish the can turn off the engine quickly.

Let the pistons soak while you change the oil, then start and drive around and watch all the white smoke come from your tail pipes.

Decarbonizing will reduce pinging and knocking you mentioned in another post you had.

Seafoam is da bomb!


my favorite part is the smoke cloud

i'm seafoamed all my vehicle and also my parents and brother's vehicles.
gets that nasty carbon out, and i've noticed a different in mileage and a smoother running engine.

i've never used it in the oil, just in the gas tank and through a vacuum line.

If you think a teaspoon of seafoam is good, try half a can of Berryman Chemtool B-12.

Seafoam is a decent cleaner, but chemtool is MUCH better. And despite what people may tell you, I've run it in several cars up to very high mileages and NEVER had problems.

I'm giving AutoRx a try right now to see what it will do, but I can tell you right now B-12 will safely knock loose and dissolve a bunch o' crud.

Ok, here come 20 people to tell me I'm wrong...but, if it's good enough for my sludge prone 9-5....
