Schaeffer's Blend 5W-30, 4.0L 2002 Explorer

This is the first run with the Schaeffer's #701. Miles on Vehicle-34,565, on oil-4,119, approximately 4 months in service. This was run from early November to late Feb. During a really cold and snowy winter time. Plenty of long idleling from cold starts and way too much salt and sand on the roads constantly. A new air filter was installed by the dealer at the time of the oil change. No oil was added during this interval. Blackstone/Dyson did the analysis. Also listed below are the results of the UOA from 25,340 miles with Motorcraft 5w30, It ran the Motorcraft brand, with approx. 5,000 mile OCI's up until this change with Schaeffer's at 30,446 miles.

My obervation is that the Silicon is a bit high and so is the aluminum and tin as a result. I checked the filter and it's tubing and it's all tight and fitted ok. The air filter is a Motorcraft. Other than the plastic 2 piece intake manifold leaking somewhere the only other explanation I can come up with is the air filters are TOO NEW to filter properly

. For this UOA the air filter was installed at the same time as the oil tested was installed. For the previous UOA the air filter was only 5,000 miles "old" when that oil was installed. As far as the intake manifold having an air leak I would think that if I had one it would run rough. It doesn't. It's smooth at idle and runs perfectly. In all actuality it looks like the Motorcraft 5w30 did a decent job when compared to the Schaeffer's. However with the warmer weather coming I'm going to extend the OCI to 7,500 miles with the Schaeffer's and see how it does.

I see the same thing on my 2000 Ranger 3.0L V6. Everything looks tight, new air filter, runs perfectly, yet silicon numbers are higher than they should be. I'm beginning to wonder if this is a design issue with some of Ford's valves, such as the EGR control solenoid or purge canister solenoid. If they vented the thing directly to the atmosphere, it would be a source of silicon the whole time the engine is running. The problem is that you would have to dissect a valve to find out

Ford uses a silicone based sealant in all their engines - take a good look at your oil pan gasket. This material continues to leach into the oil for at least 50,000 miles and shows up as silicon or dirt. Your silicone levels will continue to decrease and have NO effect on wear rates. The only deleterious effect of high silicone is that it can cause excessive oil foaming. What makes this interesting is that very small amounts of polymeric silicone are actually blended into most oils as an anti-foam additive.

In cases where you have dirt ingestion, iron and/or chrome levels will be abnormally high. If this ingestion is severe, you will also see nickel from abrasion of the stainless steel valves and valve stems. Elevated Iron and Chrome is also coming from the valvetrain and piston rings/cylinder walls ....

Stainless Steel = Fe + Cr + Ni

It was the Motorcraft filter. Considering how easy it is to change the filter, doing extended drains with a filter change would be a piece of cake

. This engine seems to be a bit harsh on oils and shears them down. I wonder does anybody have experience in running 10,000 miles on an oil with a filter change with this Ford 4.0L SOHC engine.

The issue is whether the silicon is causing additional wear and IMO it is not. High Si (at least anything over 9 ppm by this boards standards) is not always bad and until it reaches 30 ppm for me it is nothing to sweat about. The trend is the key and I have one engine with consistenly high si, over 20-25 most of its life, still going strong. We get too stressed out about this number and need to look at the trend over several UOA before any conclusions or concerns need to be addressed. 20 ppm is nothing IMO.
 
Looks good to me for a first run. We have seen on this board that it takes a while for the new oil to get acquainted with the engine, especially following a dino. I'll bet with another interval or two that the TBN improves and the wear metals come down, so that your 7.5k is reachable. JMO

When you stop doing oil analysis you'll stop seeing the Si thats coming from the Hyperuetectic pistons used in this engine series ... He He.

It is my understanding that sealants with any silicon has not been used by Ford in at least a couple of moons

They have all gone to anerobics which first used in Aviation has now caught on as it's impervious to engine oil unlike silicon sealers .

Whimsey - Looks like we have the same engine and we both have a desire to find that perfect oil/OCI combination. After the current fill of Havoline Syn, I will switch to Mobil 1 5w30 and leave it on for 7,500 miles with a filter change at maybe 4,000 miles. If that yields decent results I may try for 10,000 miles. The Havoline Syn did a great job at preventing high wear numbers, but it did not have a high TBN at 4,100 miles. I am hoping that the Mobil 1's high initial TBN might help it to go the distance.
