Sounds to me like you've got some type of aftermarket system?

My 2006 Dmax shuts down immediately upon turning it off and removal of the key. I have run mine pretty darn hot and hard when pulling my trailer, and if I shut it off upon immediate pull over, it shuts down immediately (which is why I always leave it running when fueling up for the sake of cool down).

I'm not saying your trucks don't do what you say. I'm just curious as to how/why they do it? Are there aftermarket features added? Are they special order fleet vehicles? Do all your trucks have tuners? Something must be different when contrasting your vehicles to the ones I'm around.

But my point is that you made a blanket statement to infer that all Dmax's have cool-down timers. I know that mine (2006 LBZ), and my neighbor's (2005 LLY), does not have such as feature. To the best of my knowledge, the factory stock Dmax's do not have a turbo-cool-down timer; at least not on all years of manufacture.

Just because all YOUR trucks have it, does not mean that ALL trucks have it. Something must be different?

i know that the powerstrokes now have the delayed-off feature as a option, i don't exactly know when it became a option, my 07 didn't, so somewhere during the 6.4 powerstroke run.

i also have a couple of friends with 06 duramax's that do not have this feature, maybe it was a option i don't know, but with common sense it shouldn't be a issue
 
There has been a mod to do this since at least 2001 on the Powerstroke trucks that involved the factory IAC that you get when you get the PTO option. If you didn't have the PTO option you could get the factory controller and install it and have a way to program delayed shutdown. Do not remember all the details but it is along those lines, remember quite a few DS members talking about it and doing it.

anyway no big deal all i know is our stock '06 does it,aftermarket system i have no idea it did it from day one when we brought it home,maybe a GM option back in '06??,i;ts a nice feature for sure,most us have common sense yes but when your rushed for time on a busy large farming operation with things needing to get done one don't usually have time to sit in truck letting it idle 5 mins before shut down.
 
daman - when you state "dmaxs have auto shutdown ..." that is an inclusive statement; the inference is that all dmax equipped vehicles have such. I don't know how else to interpret that. You didn't exclude anything, so your comment becomes inclusive of all Dmaxes by default. OK - enough of the English lesson.

Now, the question is how/why you have a cool down feature? It certainly wasn't an "option". Not at least an RPO coded option from GM that I'm aware of. Further, you are the very first person to EVER mention this feature as a "stock" application. As much as I've been around them, and read about them, and talked with people about them, I've NEVER heard of a stock cool down timer that allows the engine to run after the key is removed on a stock Dmax truck.

Do you have some kind of dealer installed auto-start key-fob system? Perhaps that has an additional feature of cool down? You say you brought it home from day one, but you have no idea if it has an aftermarket system? Did you buy it new, or used? If new, was there an invoice that would show the additional equipment added? If used, would it not be possible that the previous owner added the feature? I guess I should even ask; are you referring to the 6.6L Dmax in the 2500/3500 HD trucks, or are you talking about the 7.8Ls in the bigger 4500/5500 trucks?

Further, if I understand you correctly, you have more than one 2006 that does this? Again, were these special fleet order vehicles? Were they modified BEFORE you got them; who prep'd them for delivery?

I'm not asking you to call you out and belittle you. I do not agree that all Dmaxs have this feature, but I am always willing to learn something new, and if I have to admit I'm wrong, then so be it. But I need some kind of detailed information as proof. And consider this: it would actually be to my benefit if you are right! Why? Because I'd like to think I have this feature too, but haven't discovered it yet! So help me out here, please? Either you're right, and many of us can learn something, or you're wrong (at least about a "stock" truck) and you're leading me on a wild goose chase ...

dnewton all i know is what i've posted above,going on that when i get back to work in the spring I'll investigate this furtherer.....if it is aftermarket it's the best mod you could do for these trucks.
 
I can wait until spring; hot turbo's are not really my problem at this time of year. Here's something to ponder during your time off.

We both (presumably) have similar trucks; 2006 Dmax's. My owners manual has some great info in it. One of my favorite features is the cold weather "high idle" feature that warms up the truck. I have a low level work truck; it's not a fancy truck (like an LTZ, etc), so I don't have the DIC steering wheel controls. When I have to reset my oil or fuel filter info, I have to tap dance on the pedals (most people tab through with the DIC steering wheel controls). But my point is this; I can turn on/off the warm-up feature with my pedals because there is a specific reference in my owner's manual as how to do this. It is well described, and well documented in print. So follow along ...

You claim that your STOCK Dmax trucks (you indicated you have more than one) all have this "cool down" timer feature, and your trucks are also 2006 models, just like mine. But NOWHERE in the owners manual can I find any reference to a cool down timer feature. One would think that if a vehicle were going to run AFTER the driver removed the key, GM would have put SOMETHING in print as to why and how that happens. After all, don't you think that might scare a few people that were not expecting a vehicle to continue to run AFTER they removed the key? So, at the very least, if ALL Dmax trucks do this, as you inferred in your original statement, don't you think there would be some mention of it in the owners manual?

Further, if your trucks do it, and mine does not, (and presuming your trucks are factory stock), that would mean that somehow the feature is able to be turned on/off, would it not? Again, don't you think they would have put SOMETHING, ANYTING in the manual as to the procedure to turn it on/off, just like the cold temp high-idle feature?

Also, after checking with public posts over the last day on a few different GM truck forums, I cannot find anyone that contends that such as feature is STOCK on all Dmax trucks. The closest I've come is a guy that says he can do it by manipulating his key-fob remote. Key fobs are NOT always factory stock! My base level truck did not come with key fobs; I have plain ol' keys. So at the very least, even if it were included somehow with the factory key fob, you'd STILL have to believe that GM would describe the function in the manaul, would you not? Well, not in my 2006 manual they don't, anyway.

What I think is that either you have some type of dealer installed GM accessory system, or other aftermarket remote start feature, or your just flat pulling my leg.

Again, I'd like to be wrong and have you be right, because that would mean I would also have the benefit of such a system. But right now, I don't see the evidence pointing that way.

So to come full circle, back to the poor OP and his oil topic, hot turbo temps might be an issue, and his lube choice might be mitigated by this at some point in his consideration. At the very least, if HIS truck does shut down upon immediate removal of the key (like mine does), then he should be aware of this so that he performs a "manaul" cool down event if warranted, like everyone else but daman.

Schaeffers 700 15-40 is G II plus and 20-25% pao.
Schaeffer's 9000 5-40 is GIII and 20-25% pao.
BOTH will do an excellent job as most of you know...each to their own. You are already getting the mph benefit from the micron moly and pentro, though you will pick up a very moderate increase with the 5-40 by viscosity. A dose of 132 surely can't be harmful, especially at such a small dosage. I like to throw in a lil 132 in my vehicles from time to time. If you and your machine are liking the 700, I'd stick with it.

Consider Schaeffers 204sat for the Allison and the 293 or 167 gear oils. Any of our fine premium fuel treatments will keep your fuel system up to snuff.
 
Sales, whats the difference between the Group II plus and the Group III base stock? Also, what benefit does the antimony do in the #132? BTW, I use the Diesel Treat 2000 currently. PM me with a price list of the 15w40, 5w-40, the red tube moly grease, as well as the Diesel Treat 2000 in both the summer and winter grades.

Note that the Schaeffer #700 oil (marketed as a 15w40) has a cold cranking viscosity of 5700 mP @ -20°. The 15W spec is a max of 7000 mp. The #700 oil is actually more like an 8W-40 if 8W existed, which it doesn't, and oil labeled 15w40 sells better.

You can't go wrong with either, the #700 is working great for you so stick with it, and no point spending any money on the additive.

The Group III base oil will be slightly thinner when very cold, not thin as much when very hot, and have better oxidation resistance than Group II or II+, especially the best-of-category base oils Schaeffer buys.
 
So other than cold flow, what is the benefit of the 10w30 HDEO over a 15w40? I remember reading an article about how OTR trucks overhaul mileage jumped from 300K-400K to 1M miles or more simply with the use of a 40W instead of the 30W. The way my business is, this truck will have to last me longer than I had originally thought. I'm sure that dnewton will chime in. He seems to know his facts with the 10w30 and seemed happy with it and has used oil analysis to prove it.
 
How much of a mpg benefit are we talking about? If it's not a substantial increase, I couldn't see a small company or an independant O/O taking that chance when an overhaul costs around 15K on a Cat. It would take a lot of fuel to offset the shortenend engine life. I'm sure that the oil technology has been greatly improved since the days when they jumped to the 40W though.
