I've seen several references to Schaeffer 9000 5w30. I go to their web site and no mention is made of this grade in the 9000 series. Also, is the 9000 series overkill when the 7000 series would probably be OK for our non-severe driving? I'm looking for a good synthetic to use in my 06 Avalon when it is out of warranty. I would prefer to only change twice a yr. Right now we drive approx. 19k per yr. I plan to keep the car for 200K at least. As we get older (I'm 65) and health issues arise that will probably shrink. Would OCI's exceeding 6 mos. be a problem?

Amsoil would probably be just as good in my application, but in my own way, I'm just as anal as most here. I just don't care to get into the minute technical details. If it works, I'm happy. That doesn't mean I want to use any oil that is on sale. It would seem that Schaeffer's is preferred by many here for good reasons.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Mobil 1 (not EP) works quite well with Toyota's. If what you say above is true, then it should be tops on your list. It is readily available and reasonably priced. Don't get caught up in the hype on this board. It is a good oil.

Alamogunar,

Here is a link to the PDS for 9000 5w30

And here for 9000 5w40
http://www.schaefferoil.com/datapdf/9000.pdf

The 9000 5w30 has apparently only recently made it down us little guys - you could not get it in quarts till just a few wks ago. Schaeffers apparently primarily serves the industrial market - so we're last in the food chain.

I'm a recent convert to Schaeffers. The reviews and used oil analysis on BITOG indicate we've found one fine brew of petro engineering. Plus they're a low-hype honest company.

Anyway, the 7000 and 9000 are actually very close in price (and VERY competitively priced vs. the brand names that have commercials on t.v. every few mintes). At close to 20k/yr I would go 9000 at twice/yr. But then I'm a long OCI guy (and I put my $ where my mouth is). I hope BITOGr 'siterep' will chime in on this thread - he'll probably have advice based a bit less on gumption.

Happy trails!

Ericthe pig says it very well.
6 month ocis will be very comfortable with either oil.
The 9003 has GIII and pao vs. 701 which is GIIPlus and pao.
You'd be happy and sleep well with Schaeffers.

I'm an 80k user of M1 (reg. line and EP), infact I'm about a 120k user if you include my Mazda M1 years in that. So I'm not a waffler on oil - I'm sure I'd still be with M1 if my van didn't presently have exponentiating consumption and above avg iron readings while under M1's care. Schaeffers may fair no better in my harsh Sienna engine - but I've decided it's the top candidate for getting the shot.

That being said - many users have outstanding results from M1 reg. line (I haven't seen a lot of data on EP) - but my own story at the end of 80k has forced my hand.

Note to Alamo - just an FYI - I own a '98 Sienna - a known sludge prone engine - I pushed M1 to regular 8 to 9k OCIs - perhaps ill advised in this engine. Thus my situation is probably an outlier in M1's data line. You'll find some serious M1 advocates here on BITOG.

I believe that you'll find several people here using the Schaeffers 7000 blend and now the 9000 (new stuff) for 10k mile intervals with good results. "Mokanic" is one here who stocks these oils in bulk for customer oil changes. You might shoot him a PM. And he's a Toyota master tech.

The only problem with the Schaeffer oils is getting them. I am still working on the last of the stash I bought for $250 3 years ago. Got 1 or 2 changes left. I don't know what the order policy is now. Of course, the cost has gone up since then too.

So Tones. This is a bad thing that you haven't had to purchase oil for 3 years nor pay for any of the price increases.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Salesrep (Mark) is doing a new smaller quantity deal for guys like yourself who may want just maybe 2 cases or so. See his post in the site sponsor section or contact him. He's a good guy to deal with.

Thanks for all the comments. One thing I forgot. I use only Pure One or Wix (NAPA Gold) on my truck or Toyota filters on the Avalon. Will change my own when warranty expires. Will any of these filters go the full 10K? Not sure Purolator or Wix even make the cartridge filters.

In your case I would run the 9000 series 5W30. You will find it is priced close to the 7000 series. I have had very good results in my Toyotas/Hondas/Kubotas running Schaeffer oils. I am pleased with what they offer for the price.
As far as the oil filter question;you'll get alot of conflicting advice on that one. I have my idea of what the best filter is for Toyotas but since I don't cut open filters and try to scrape the junk out to see which one worked best I suppose it's only an opinion. I will say it would be in your best interests to stay away from the orange can of death. You mentioned a Purolator Pure one and I think it is an above average filter. I would also say Amsoil's EAO filter and Denso's filters are suitable. I have used the last three mentioned with Schaeffer oils with great results. I am not a filter guru but have used them with good used oil analysis. Certainly Amsoil's EAO is a frontrunner in longer intervals. I use the EAO in one application and only change it every other oil change. That goes against everything I learned about oil&filter changes but the used oil analysis showed no ill effects and for what they cost you have to get extended life out of them to make them cost-effective. On the oil changes that the EAO is not due to be changed I screw it off and carefully drain out the oil that will come out. They have a thick gasket on them and I have not had one of them to leak after re-installing it. The filter isn't hard to access on my Toyotas and Hondas so I think it's worth the effort. If it was a problem to get to I don't think the small amount of oil would hurt a thing. Most 4 and 6 cylinder engines retain a qt. to a qt. and a half of oil when you change it anyway. It must work fairly well,my old Yoda truck has past the 600K mark and still poking along.
Schaeffer isn't hard to get for anyone who is a member of BITOG and in the U.S. Salesrep is doing his best to make their products avalible for smaller customers who can't or don't need to buy large amounts at a time. The effort is worth it. They are more than willing to answer your questions if you contact them and they save the money it would cost to have golden oil horses running across the tv screen and pass it on to the consumer. They aren't the only show in town but they are one of the best shows in town. Hope it works well in your car and verify your intervals with analysis at least a couple of times to be sure everything is good to go.

Man thats pretty good. Im debating wheather to use the EAO filters for the full year and just change the oil every six months.

You are driving around 19K a year. If your mileage is spread out equally month to month and you are looking at 2 OCI/year, you will be looking to run the oil out to 9500 per OCI. The Schaeffer 7000 is a synthetic blend, but I have no idea if the blend will handle those kind of OCI's. You would probably need to run 1-2 used oil analysis to confirm if the oil will hold out iwth that much mileage. That oil should safely take you to 6-7K miles. That would be a good starting point for the first UOA.

The Schaeffer 9000 series full synthetic, while a little more expensive than the 7000 series is very reasonably priced compared to most of the national name brands and is a good deal considering the quality of the oil used and the Schaeffer additive pack. I just recently ordered some 9000 and Neutra from Specialized Lubricants and expect the shipment today or Monday.

I'm going to sneak this question in here (should be on filter forum) since there was filter discussions -

I've historically used M1, Pure One, Bosch, and SuperTech filters (pretty much in that order - my Mazda typically gets either a Bosch or ST) - I know it's hard to say which filter is better, but are there any of these you guys wouldn't use? A criteria for me is synthetic media for efficiency and good load capability for long drain.

And should I put Wix near the top of this list? I've heard M1 has restricted flow a bit, but a test by Bob (of BITOG) showed no apparent affect on wear numbers.

I'm about to buy filters for my Schaeffers fill in both vehicles, thus the question.

Thanks!
