Can someone summarize the Schaeffer ATF offerings for me? I did some searching on this board and looked at the Schaeffer website but I'm a bit confused.

I'm interested in Dexron III and Mercon V spec. fluids (does not have to be the same fluid – one for each application is fine).

The Schaeffer website is borderline worthless (heck they can't even spell Dexron correctly). I don't doubt that this oil is great stuff and I'm interested in it but a bit confused. The site lists #204 as Dexron III and Mercon compatible. How about Mercon V? What is the #204s that I see referenced?

Sorry about their website but they are in the process of updating it this week. Hopefully it will be much better.

Schaeffers #204S Dexron III is Mercon compatable. But not Mercon V. Which is completly diffrent. Schaeffer does not have Mercon V.

Dexron III Supreme "is not recomended" for use in those automatic transmission that specify the use of Chrysler ATF+@ Type 7176, ATF+3, ATF+4, Ford Mercon V , Honda Genuine MT Fluid, Honda Genuine MTX Fluid, Honda Genuine CVT Fluid, Hyundai SP-II Automatic Transmission Fluid, or Toyota ATF Type T or T-IV fluids.

Dexron III Supreme can be used in off-highway transmission, power steering and other hydraulic systems that require the use of a Dexron III or Allison C-4 type fluid.

Thanks for the info.

What is the difference between 204 and 204s. The website doesn't list 204s at all that I can see.

Also, is there any plans for a Mercon V fluid? With all the problems late model Ford 4R70W transmissions have with shuddering and literally "wearing out" fluid a superior Mercon V fluid would be welcome and definitely a wise investment.

Thanks again.

ssmokn, The 204 was a mineral and the 204s is a synthtic blend. Also note the 204 has been drop from our product line. I don't "think" schaeffer will make a Mercon V until big trucks or tractors start to call for it. But I which they did!

David, I checked with corporate and they stated they still sell the 204. I had heard the same thing but apparently this is not the case at present.

From what I understand also, there is way too many variables in the different types of trannie fluids and many manufactures are establishing their own brand/blend. The problem is not any one by itself has enough market share to go and develope schaeffers style of trannie fluid for any one and as David suggested that if the heavy equipment manufactures start to use this, then at that time schaeffers I'm sure would venture into that area so to keep its market share.

ssmokn: Both Pennzoil and Quaker State make a product called Multi Vehicle ATF. The Quaker State version is available at Wal-Mart. It meets DEXRON III/MERCON/MERCON V specs. It is a Group III synthetic base product. It ain't cheap.

Too bad Schaeffer's doesn't have a Mercon V fluid. I understand why based on the comments above but that could be a nice niche market. Many Fords are very hard on transmission fluid and they are plagued by torque converter shudder (especially the AODE/4R70W).

I guess I just have to continue doing what I'm doing and changing the fluid every 10K to 15K as cheap insurance.

Thanks for the replies.

Just my $0.00002 cents here.

I am very skeptical of any ATF that claims it serves all vehicle AT's, whether it's Amsoil, Pennzoil, QS, Mobil or whomever. Now, between 1975 and 1995, you could have used one ATF for most AT's, but not today. The Chrysler ATF+ bla, bla, bla, is one case in point. Just one of the many reasons I won't buy those Farvernugen-type products.

Schaeffer's is being very forthright with their specs and applications. Better to know you can't use it than to use and have mechanical problems later on, due to fluid incompatibility.

I've had a few so far with this problem and we put in a full bottle of neutra 131 and had resloved that problem. Same with the cummins diesel pickup and their shifting problems.

How much is the #204S?

I have bought the quaker state multi-vehicle and am in the middle of the 3 to 4 drains it takes to replace most of the fluid in my Camry. Only 2.5 quarts drain out.

Now I'm having second thoughts, especially since the flash point is almost 30C lower in the quaker state. The Camry requires Dexron III.

I'm also wondering if I can use it in my Windstar. It came with Mercon from the factory and now that Mercon V is out (and recommended)can use that too.

If #204S is Mercon compatible and vastly exceeds that standard, I am thinking I can use it in the Windstar without worry.

Maybe the Mercon V standard is not claimed simply because Schaeffer doesn't want to test it to that standard. Cost vs. Benefit. The only difference I see between the #204s and the quaker state multi-vehicle is the viscosity at -40C. Schaeffer is 15000 and QS is >9000.

jj,

Cost on all of schaeffers products vary as to how you purchase it. If less than 250, you're looking at retail+shp, if over 250 min order, then wholesale and no shipping. Best to call Tim in Ar kan saw, and ask him for less than min order price as I don't know. Goto this page to look him or others up..

As long as your vehicle doesn't require mercon V but just states mercon, then the 204s maybe used. Only if V is specified do we advise against the use of 204s.

I also agree with Molakule that any multi purpose do all atf fluid would make me nervous because there is differences between the fluids and no one additive can be added to meet all requirements.

Johnny,

Do you know what stores sell Pennzoil Mercon/Dexron III ATF? I need 2 quarts to change the fluid in the transfer case in my Exlporer. The numbers look great, that's why I am trying to hunt it down. I have tried Wal-Mart, Autozone and Advance Autoparts here in Cincinnati and nobody stocks it. But then again, the stores around he are really pathetic.

Thanks.
