I had some lights on...Check Engine and others. AutoZone gave me quite a list. No idea.

I took the truck to a local shop and he was like 'it is the torque converter...something something'. I had too much ATF
after a drain and fill on Tundra. (no dip stick to check).

So I'm guess just like most things in life, there are good, better and best with scan tools? Shop scan tools would be expensive would they?

You gotta measure the fluid you drain out on certain vehicles. If you have a smartphone, the right app and a Bluetooth code reader is cheaper than a ticket to a Browns game.

Check out Toyota TechStream, The software & dongle are pretty cheap.

You need a scan tool that can read out manufacturer specific codes. Generic OBDII codes only do engine and emissions codes. Things like transmission codes usually can't be read by a generic code reader. There's a few other ones on the market. That toyota one mentioned sounds like a good one. Ford/Mazda also has Forscan. But for other makes, there's the Autel Diaglink, does scanning for one manufacturer specific vehicle and each additional manufacturer is $10. About $89 on Amazon.

There's also the knock off Delphi DS150E, about $40 or so on Aliexpress, supposed to do all car lines but I don't know of anyone who has tried it.

Spend more and you get AutoEnguity scanner. It needs a laptop. You get the basic scanner and each major manufacturer is extra. But this is a bidirectional scanner. It can command the ECM to do things. Getting close to a scanner from SnapOn or one a dealer would have.

I just use a Bluetooth adapter that I connect on my phone. Then I will run the Torque app.

+1 - I would do this and see if it meets your needs. While I have the more expensive Auto Enginuity one, I also have the smart phone Torque one in my truck in case it's needed in a pinch.
