Scan Gauge ll Question

I have an old Scan Gauge ll I used on my older Toyotas and Lexus. I’m trying to check the ATF temp in my “new” ‘19 ES350. I had some difficulty this morning and did a little googling. It appears I may need firmware 4.22 in order to check the fluid temp in the ‘19. Can any of you shed some light on this? It’s over $300 for scan gauge 3. If appears to be about $55 for the upgrade.

All I want the gauge for is to check ATF temp in ‘05-‘21 Toyotas and Lexi. I’m heading 45 minutes into the big city now.

Any suggestions?

Couple thoughts--

Ten years ago I put a SGII into my Tundra to monitor ATF. There was two sensors, but only 1 would return data. Never figured out why.

Secondly, if you are used to old school ATF temperatures, hold onto your hat. 210F is "normal", at least at convertor outlet (sump will be different). My Tundra would only read convertor outlet, and it was a bit shocking, until I realized that these transmissions are not known for problems, and that Aisin transmissions have long been known for running hot. Heck, the truck had a thermostat on the ATF and I don't think it'd try to cool until at least 210F, maybe higher.

In traffic I think mine sat around the 200 mark. Highway was maybe 190. But unlocked on a hill it'd zip to 220, 230 with ease.

Sorry, can't help you on the fix--but wanted to make sure you did not get it fixed and then have a heart attack with the findings.

All I’m doing is changing the ATF. Need to get to 104 to check fluid level.

Not doing any daily monitoring.

Ah! got it. Apologies.

I do not know if it applies to all models but there is a "paperclip" method where you short pins 4 and 13 of the ODBII connector. But I think I may have misread the urgency in this thread also, so if there is no urgency in doing this, then no reason to not get SG to get updated for the problem.

ScanGauge II works for my 2016 to 2018 ES350.

It looks like it cost $25.00 from scangauge's website to order the latest firmware update.

https://www.scangauge.com/support/upgrade/

Then click the button labeled "Click Here Order Your ScanGauge Upgrade"

No problem there. Jump pins in OBD, and vehicle will tell you exact temperature when you should check level. Measuring procedure starts at 09.30:

Thank y’all. My issue is I just finished my 3rd drain and fill. Removed 3.5 qts cold fluid every time. Since I’m up to about 90% new fluid I’m done. I added an extra 1/2 qt of fluid this time and ASSUMED my Scan Gauge would work.
I’ll check out the YouTube when I get home. Worse case is I just call the company.

Just follow procedure from video I posted. It is official Toyota procedure.

Well, it just got better. I called ScanGauge and talked to Orlando. What a nice guy. He walked through everything. Took his time with me going from garage to computer to garage.....
My gauge is up to date. I have version 4.52 No firmware update is required. He helped me find all the numbers and gave me a video from their www to watch.
He said it is simple but tedious. Told me to try it and call him back if I had any trouble at all. Great customer service!

I knew how to enter those 4 different codes. I knew how to check firmware. What was throwing me off was I saw on their website I needed firmware update 4.22 AND I had forgotten how long it takes to start "communicating". It must take a minute or so before it connects with the car. I ASSUMED it was not communicating due to the fact I needed the firmware update. However, all I needed to do was wait longer for the Scan Gauge to connect with my car. I hadn't used it in about 4 years....LOL Maybe this will help someone else.

Looks cool. But the only thing I need is something to check my ATF temp every 30-50K when I do my D&F’s on my transmissions.

$12 BT dongle and Carista. I don't think you need the paid side to see live data -- could be wrong. I keep it annually for Toyota seat belt chimes
