Scag Hydarulic Fluid Choice?

I was wondering I am rebuilding a scag mower tigercub with hydrostatic motors and pump and the factory fill is 20w50 and I work on Dixie Choppers that have had Schaeffer 15w40 and now Lucas oil as factory fill but I also use Amsoil stuff in my personal cars and am trying to make a choice as to what to fill the hydro system with now. I like the moly in Schaeffers a lot however the Amsoil is good stuff too. LUCAS is not an option for me, any sugeestions with justification is welcomed.

Lucas oil and dixie choppers have a marketing agreement so i would agree with your non-option on that...

Most economical choice should be Schaeffers, which usually offers the most bang for the buck. The 15w40 7000 or 5W-40 9000 would both be very shear resistant and low wear in your hydrostatic system and the engine. The Amsoil AME would also work well, but at a higher cost, and I am not sure that there would be a clear advantage with the Amsoil. Both also make a 20W-50, but I might save that for down the road as pumps and wheel motors age down the road.

Being a commercial machine with a big sump for the hydrostatic drives, I'd just run a readily available off the shelf HDEO 15w40 or 20w50. If it was a non-serviceable sealed type unit that held ~3qts, I'd put the best quality liquid gold in there I could get.

I agree that the Schaeffers is the way I am going. The moly I feel will give the best protection against wear in this system. I am however going to run the engine with the 15w40 Amsoil Diesel oil as I feel the Amsoil may be a bit better with High Temp Oxidation protection in an air cooled application here in FL.

My ferris ZTR suggests Mobil 1 for the hydro, fwiw.
