I was finishing up with the neighbors Cub Cadet mower yesterday. It required a new main drive belt for the 3 bladed 54" deck. I knew the dealer would have the correct belt so we went there. The price was $63+, MTD make. Later on I looked on the e-bay search & the same belt new was $25 + $6 shipping. If a guy was able to plan ahead a little you could save a little cash.

Yes I have no problem supporting the local shops much of the time. I just thought the price was a little high.

Good call. I found an air filter for my 15.5hp B&S at Home Depot for $10, the place I bought it from wanted $37. It was in John Deer packaging, but had B&S and the part number on the end of the filter :) I thought it looked kind of familiar...

I don't mind supporting the small local guy, but I don't like getting ripped off either. The difference between $63 and $31 is major. That $32 is better in my pocket than the local guys pocket.

There's lots of options when it comes to belts. I would expect an OPE shop to be expensive. It's a wonder most can afford to keep the lights on in this climate. My local Cub shop sells Oregon belts. They are expensive, but will take a major beating and still last. If I can plan ahead, I too would go the mail-order route to keep a spare on hand.

Sometimes I'll mention that parts are available cheaper online. The people that want my business will usually come back with a price that is similar to what it would cost me online with shipping, and I'd buy right there.

I buy smaller/thinner belts for self-propelled push mowers at Ace Hardware if I can. The have just about every size imaginable and it's easy to match them up. Good old Cub Cadet...I mean MTD...same thing.

I'll try Ebay for my $55 drive belt next time though...maybe get an extra.
