Long time lurker, first time poster. A lot of great information this site, wish I could get a better handle on the search function. Any way, my daughter bought a 2003 Saturn Vue, 3.0l w/5speed automatic and naturally there is no owners maunal. I have been trying to identify which type of atf is used in the tranny. I have read T-IV, Dexron III-H and just plain ole Dexron III and so on and so on. JUST what atf does this thing use? I want to be sure it is the correct fluid since these Saturn's seem to have a terrible record concerning the transmissions. Would prefer a good OTC synthetic.

The 5-speed is an AW box.

Good luck on measuring ATF level.

I have bought an owners manual just don't have it yet. What is an AW tranny? Oh, yeah, I found the stubby dipstick hidden down by the exhaust, should be fun trying to check it hot an running!

AW is Aisin Warner. Toyotas use AW units.
That transmission family is used by several automakers.

AW makes it? I guess thats why we never had any trans problems on the V6 models when I worked at the Saturn dealership. Just a warning to you all - never ever buy a Vue with the 4 cyl and VTI transmission!! NEVER!!

Yep. VTi transmission was the biggest piece of junk GM ever put out in the recent years.

AW 5-speed was used for a short period of time in the Saturn line-up before it was replaced with the 4T45E, possibly due to cost issues. The FWD/AWD Chevy Equinox still uses a AW 5-speed unit though.

T-IV/JWS3309 is the recommended fluid.

The only T-IV I have been able to find locally is Castrol Multi-Vehicle ATF at Autozone. No body around this part of the world has even heard of 3309. Every place I have been has tried to push Dexron as the oil it should use, so the question is... What the devil are all the Toyota's out there using since the T-IV is so difficult to find.

Amsoil!

You can use a fluid convertor like Lubegard or Smartblend with DexronIII or MerconV.
