I turn once again to this forum for assistance. I am trying to remove the harmonic balancer from a Saturn SC2. It's the 1.9L DOHC engine.

I have done everything short of cracking the timing chain cover to get the bolt broken loose. Has anyone here removed the crankshaft bolt from one of these cars? Is there any chance at all that this is a left hand thread?? My service manual doesn't make mention of it at all.

Thanks for any help.

I hope that won't hurt the starter gear. I have honestly never seen a bolt so tight. I already cracked one socket.

Thanks for the assistance. I'll try this when i get home.

worked twice out of two tries for me.

Take the spark plugs out too so it'll spin more freely.

Well, I gave it a try and it worked. It took two tries but it broke the bolt loose.

I wonder why everything on this car is so incredibly tight. Even the small fasteners that use a 10mm socket require excessive force.

Oh well,,,after removing the oil pan I see the damage and I will be removing this engine to replace the crankshaft this weekend. The #2 connecting rod bearing has spun on the journal and done considerable damage.

Thanks for the help guys!!

It's a normal thread, leftey loosey.

Get a 21mm socket, breaker bar, and prop the bar on the pavement under the front bumper.

Pull the fuel pump relay, hit the starter.

Done.

Thanks. It's been more difficult than I have anticipated but that just means that it takes a bit longer,, and I get to drink more beer
