My girlfriends 04 Ion is coming up on 6 months and 4,000 miles. Does anybody know when the OLM usually comes on in the ION? I searched but didn't find anything on the internet. The Ion doesn't have a percentage counter, rather a "Change oil soon" light comes on.

The Colbalt has the same 2.2L Ecotec. I found out the OLM comes on at about 8,000 for the Colbalt. So I would imagine the Ion would be around this mileage also.

I was planning to pick up some PP on sale for $3.99 a quart, and go until the OLM comes on with the next OCI. The car has Pennzoil 5w30 in the crankcase right now.

Your theory is logical, if the computers calculate it the same way. Plan on the expected 8k change, if no light wait for it, if get to 10k, go ahead and change and find out if problem in the OLM system.

Some GM cars don't have the percentage display in the DIC, but you can check the percentage remaining with a GM Tech II I think.

When the light comes on you have about 20% life left. The OLM in each engine calculates life independantly. Just because a single Cobalt showed an OCI of 8K doesn't mean the Ion will also show the same interval unless they were both driven under extremely similar circumstances.

In any case refer your owner's manual. If the OLM does not come on within a year of the last oil change it instructs you do go ahead and do a change, then reset the system.

Thanks for the info. She does mix driving, 60% city and 40% highway. So that might lower the total miles on the OCI.
