I'm in San Antonio all this week for business trip. Anybody got any cool places to go besides the Riverwalk? Too touristy....beer at the hotel is like 4.50. Got to find a grocery store. I'm staying at this hotel off of I-410 and the class is right off the Loop1604, North of town.

I was there last year for my company's annual meeting, we mostly stayed at the Riverwalk although there are some local places off the side streets near the Alamo. Some steakhouse across from the Alamo had a real good breakfast for cheap. We didn't rent a car so we were kinda limited.

not a beer drinker so I can't make much of a recommendation on that, but for the best Mexican (texmex) food:

a little hole in the wall (those are always best) called La Cazadora, on West Ave a mile or so north of IH10, or a few miles south of 410. Just north of Basse Rd/West Ave intersection. Very large mexican-looking fruit stand across the street. Family run, cheap, great TexMex not trendy at all. You must have puffy tacos (don't ask, just have some).

OR...very trendy but authentic and fabulous atmosphere: La Fogata on Vance Jackson a few miles S of 410.

Many mexican food place aren't open on Sunday, btw.

enjoy

There is a Mexcan place... wish that I remembered the name, in town, away from the riverwalk. It is on a corner, has glass all around. really good. If I can find the name, Ill let you know... I highly reccomend it.

TooMAnyWheels, I feel like we may know each other if you spent time at the slotcar place in wonderland....(crossroads? nah...)

Winston Churchill HS, 1973

Tip Top! gads, I had forgotten all about that. Lotsa Sunday after church meals there....forget the diet.

Miniature golf? The best in THE WORLD: Cool Crest at Fredericksburg Rd just north of IH10. Don't let the neighborhood scare you.

Hey thanks. Actually saw that one when driving from Oklahoma. Check this out....From Fort Sill to San Antonio via I-44 and then turn off on 281 in Wichita Falls, made it in 5 hours and 30 minutes in a 02 Expedition. Radar detector saved my nards twice. Burned a quart of oil and the governor kicks in at 100 plus. Will say this about Texas drivers, they will move over for you on the country roads.....but drivers in San Antonio are not a courteous.

Hey chief,

First of all, it's LOOP 410!

Second, class is at 1604 and what? I live on 1604 and Potranco, right next to Sea World (NW side of town.) Maybe we can get together and go to Hooters downtown for some beer and hooters!

....that is of course, if my cr@ppy Chevy come out of the dealer sometime this year.

I second Ken's recommendation on Cazador and La Fogata, and will add Casa Sol on Fredericksburg between Loop 410 and Callaghan. I particularly like Cazador's cheese enchiladas, my parent's agree on the puffy taco's (although this may be an acquired taste), Casa Sol's salsa is the best I have ever had, and they make some dynamite dishes with mushroom sauce.

On Fredericksburg between West Avenue and Vance Jackson is the Tip-Top cafe, a crowded, old style cafe which makes fabulous fried food. For both dietary and taste reasons I don't normally eat anything fried, but I make an exception for Tip Top. For a heart healthy but good tasting meal, try Ginni's on San Pedro, just South of the loop.

In the general vicinity of all of that is Crossroads mall, which has a slot car raceway in the food court. I recently discovered this business has the very same large track which I spent hundreds of hours and dollars at in the early 70's.

If you are still in town on Friday, head south of town to Pleasanton where I-37 raceway has some very fine dirt track racing.

If you can get up there the New Braunfels/Gruenne area has some nice Bier gardens. Good German Bratwurst etc..Look for "The Gristmill" if you go to Gruenne..

Somewhere in Concord Park. 222 North Loop 1604. I'm still tyring to figure my way around. I've learned one thing, stay off 281 and 410.

Grist mill in Gruene is a neat choice-- I like to bring the out of towners there.

If you have a car with you and don't mind taking a short trip, there's a really good glass blower in Wimberly [north of town, west of San Marcos] with a nice gallery. They also let you watch the creation process. It's a nice drive into the hill country on rt.281.

If it's hot outside, you can rent a tube and float the San Marcos or Guadalupe rivers [in the town of San Marcos, or New Braunfels, respectively].

There's a nice 1/4 mile drag strip east of town on I-10 that's open friday and saturday night if you want to abuse the heck out of your rental car....

Oh, and if you're the x-games type, there's a place off of I-35 about 45 minutes north of town called the Texas Ski Ranch, where you can take wakeboard lessons and a bunch of other crazy stuff.

If you are in the mood to really explore:

Cruise up I-35 North to New Braunfels and Austin

78miles, but when your cruising between 70-80mph its quite fast.

New Braufels has the shlitterbahn, a neato water park! Also San Marcos and hill country is near by which is quite pretty if the sun is not baking you.

Austin is wonderful, definately hit 6th street, for food, clubs, bars and the live music "capitol" of the US. A walk around the UT campus is also quite pleasant.

For a good tx bbq, go to county line on the HILL (not lake) for both steaks and classic grill stuff.

Otherwise in San Anton, Papasitto's Cantina although a chain does make outstanding Fajita's. Like other Pappas(ie papadeus, pappas bro's steakhouse etc) affiliated restauraunts $$$ can be up there

thank you brethren. I'm a musician on the side and Austin is where it's at, without a doubt.
