Safest way to remove the plastic oil jug seal?

Just wondering what the best way is to prevent a chunk of the plastic jug seal from contaminating the oil. Ive always punched it in, or tried to peal if off, but it never comes off cleanly.

Thanks!

I always cut around the circumference, but honestly my dull pocket knife (also known as a pocket pry bar, which is why it's dull) is better than a utility knife. Once I had a utility knife shave a sliver of plastic from the neck and it almost fell in.

In truth a small sliver is unlikely to cause problems but I don't want to introduce it to the system just the same.

You can also get funnels with the little screens at the bottom -- not a terrible idea ;)

Yeah, there's always somebody.

I cut it with a box cutter, straight across the middle. Then you can get your finger in there and peel each side upwards.
Tried that, ended up with this.

Perfect. Thanks.
I guess I shoulda built violins.
But seriously, I use Supertech or Costco oil and they have the same stretchy clear plastic seals that you show and they don't seem to be the best material for sealing an oil jug. Mine always look like yours. Seems the seal unstretches and doesn't look "clean" after it's been opened. Maybe that is a feature of the tamper-evident seal that it is not easily removed and resealed by the rapscallions that fill jugs with used motor oil and return the jug for refund at Walmart.

That's a good point ‐‐ it is fairly tamper proof

The Supertech seals are like cling wrap and I find them annoying
at least someone else shares my annoyance with those seals, i just use a box cuter and shove it in deep and dont lift the knife at all
