Newbie here. No problem so far. Works on all the site stuff I have tried, "My Stuff," "Search" and posting. Downloaded and ran. Jump in... the water's fine :-)

Did I mention that its speed seems greatly improved? Cover Flow, History, Top Sites, are readily available, and makes great "user" sense. It took very little acclimation re the Tabs on top, and the Smart Addresses are very intuitive, kinda like Google's mobile app on the iPhone. We're a Mac household, except for work related PC's, so not sure about the PC version.

It doesn't have a homepage button that I see, and I've already made it crash once, by closing one of several open tabs. I couldn't duplicate the bug.

I presume you've tried Safari 4, after all an intelligent fellow like you wouldn't criticise that about which he knows nothing; so what is it that you disliked about Safari 4, and which browser for Mac do you like best?

I think by now a majority of folks are referring to the Windows version of Safari, which *has*; more so in it's first few release(s), had some issues with stability and features. If version x of a program leaves a bad impression with me, I may very well steer clear of version x+1 as well, especially when there *are* so many really good browsers.

As a web developer (using a Mac), I can also say that there are a lot of technologies in the Web 2.0 world and the "back end" of a site that do not play nice w/ Safari. I use Firefox on my Mac, grudgingly, for this reason.

Ya, I've used Firefox too, but found that it rendered some sites even worse than Safari.

Sadly, none of the browsers, excepting iCab, seem as robust as Safari, at least in my experience. I like iCab, but couldn't swallow the $ shareware cost, especially considering some of the "free" browsers out there. Also, I use 1Password which until recently was unsupported by Agile on iCab. The goodness of iCab is that it NEVER crashed on me--it was rock solid.

Safari is my default browser on OS X. I use Firefox when I gotta use a PC.

The following is in regard to Mac:

From what I read, switching from Safari 3 to Safari 4 will cause some, many, or all plug-ins to not work. How I can find out which plug-ins are affected? I'm sure I added some plug-ins over time. How do I even find out what plug-ins I have in Safari 3?

Help -> Installed Plugins

A new window will open up with your list.

I am not a power Safari user, but the plugins I use all still work.

To find installed plug-ins, while using Safari, just press help in the menu bar, you'll then see installed-plug ins. I'm using Safari 4 for Tiger. Works OK, but not quite as quick as Safari 3. I'd wait for the out of beta version.

Ah, thanks. I should have known that.

If Safari 4 is slower than Safari 3 there's no point to switching then, really. I also have no intention of moving from Tiger to Leopard unless I have to.

If performance, security or stability is important, then beta software should never be used, unless you are actively trying to assist in development by reporting bugs, or you like using Google stuff.

To address the speed issue, though: Most times beta software is compiled with debugging ON, which slows down any application, but is essential in tracking and squishing bugs. As well, Leopard and Snow Leopard *may* be more apt to make use of some of the speed optimizations present in Safari 4. *I don't know that for a fact*, I just get that impression.
