CA water around here runs from 400 down to 250 ppm, =/-, is there a ppm value that would be hard enough to require the aluminum anode?

My water is 250ppm according to a cheap PPM meter I bought on Ebay. My water heater is still using the original magnesium anode. I get an occasional slight rotten egg smell from the hot water, but that is it.

Bad ground on the tank? Would measure how much current is passing though it. It’s probably the major cause of the deterioration. Bad water alone would not really cause this.

The rotten egg odor becomes much more pronounced when the anode is used-up (or nearly used-up).

I noticed it was getting worse a couple years ago so I fully drained the tank and that made it better.
