Wifes 2000 Caravan has severe rust issues (my bad). I have a 2004 Ram 1500 that's still pretty clean and I want to keep it that way. What's the best method of prevention. Is it washing once a week in the winters to remove salt? There's some guy in town that sprays oil underneath(he recommends spraying twice a year). After it's sprayed he recommends driving for a while in dusty dirt road to encrust the oil with dirt. Sounds pretty sloppy to me but lots of locals do it. Or do I just check for rust spots every summer, sand and paint over?

The ghetto way is dirty engine oil, but it's not so great. That's what I've been doing. The salt and water strips the oil away.

What you want is the oil based rust proofing, there's a whole thread on this recently. Locate it.

The undercarriage should be clean though before applying. Clean the previous salt and grit off before spraying.

I dont like the idea of encrusting the oil with dirt, cause I figure it may hold moisture - but maybe with enuf oil...

I know its no longer popular to rustproof a car/truck, but I have lost two dear friends (My Jeep Comanche and a normal car) to rust - so I am a believer in whatever it takes to prevent rust. everything I have bought since gets rustproofed. sometimes I pay someone and sometimes I do it myself.

I think most of the time it will rust from the inside out because the inner panels are bare metal ..so you have get it proffesionally rustproofed. You will also want to touch up the paint chips on the outside regulary. Salt won't cause rust it just speeds up the process once it starts.

I had pretty good luck with Amsoil HD metal protector. I sprayed the under carriage of my Jeep with it. It looks like something that should last about a year. I plan on checking and recoating areas in need of it late October.

Waste oil is another trick that has been used, not something that is environmentally friendly though.

That's right Steve, your spot on for the jack point. That's the rear suspension member - identical spot for my Maxima.

I have a theory that when shops lift our cars from the side body panels (because of ease of access and no bending over), NOT at the FSM lift points, that the flexing on those body sections ultimately creates rust attack.

I'll take photos of my Maxima soon, and I notice that at each hoist lift point, that's where the main rust is. And it looks crunched, the body a bit.

Hmm.. I've got a Krown 25mi from me in Fort Erie ON and never knew it! Now if I only had a new car and a passport or enhanced driver's license

Yeah I pick it up there for the back, or in the front I will pick it up by the bottom where there is a support going from the back of the fire wall to the front cross member.

I never pick it up from where the sheet metal body panels are seam welded together under the doors. That to me is a

Body side panels ARE usually the correct jack points when putting a car on the rack [newer cars].
But yes, any jack point is always a source of rust and wear - with some crushing.
Panel rail jacking is a ludicrous design that is not good enough.
But it is normal and factory recommended.
