Running Fully Synthetic From Day One-Good/Bad?

Hi.

It's perfectly fine.

I have always broke in my vehicles like so:

1.) buy it.
2.) drive it hard and vary engine speed for 20-30 miles.
3.) go home. drain factory fill.
4.) put in new oil + filter.

synthetic or not doesn't really matter.

Unless you car or truck calls for synthetic in the manual, synthetic is a waste during the warranty period and the short oil change intervals it calls for.

I have owned 28 vehicles in my long life. 13 of them were purchased new. Using regular oil, I usually changed at 4,000 to 5,000 miles. In all of my new vehicles, I always just drove them normally with no special "break-in" procedures. I did not ever drive one easy or hard. Never had a problem with excessive oil consumption or sludge.

Indifferent.

I like to describe synthetic (to myself) as having an army where you draft all these guys who are 5'11" and 164 lbs. They'll fit all your uniforms and equipment quite nicely. Such is the uniformity of a well made oil.

Don't worry about it being too slippery, causing leaks, etc etc. All old wives tales.

I've always liked to do a first oil change at 1500-2K miles using whatever dino the dealer stocks. Then at the first recommended oci, I switch to syn. I've almost had to fight the service writer at the dealership to get them to do that first short oic service; their response is that the car doesn't use break-in oil. I politely tell them I want the [censored] oil changed.

my opinion is a good syn protects the engine from wear better so why not stop what wear you can from happening in the first place?

but thats just me

I'll tell you why, because more than likely the OP will sale his car before it hits 200-300K miles. What is the benefit? None IMHO. I think it is a waist to use a synthetic if you are not going to keep the car until the motor blows. Unless one is looking to extend OCI so they spend less of their life under that car. Otherwise, it's under warranty and your wasting money by using syn.

Here are some pictures of cars that came from the factory with synthetic oil. You can plainly see what it can do the the vehicle. I would not run it, unless you have some very good health insurance.

Use it. We did/currently do in the Fit with its crazy 12k mile Honda Maintenance Minder-recommended change intervals.

Run it - the parts (like rings) that need a touch of friction to break in have already done so...on every other point, the synthetic is better...

It's good enough for dozens of cars from the factory ('Vette, AMG, BMW and otheres) so it'll work just fine in yours...

Though, if you belive that correlation is causality, clearly Loobed has shown you what can happen when you have synthetic in a new engine: it causes you to drive like an idiot and ball the car up against a guardrail...

Open Hawaiin shirts with lots of gold chains are known to have that same effect....

I personally would leave the Factory fill in for a couple thousand and let it do its thing, then drain it and jump right to synthetic for better protection.

Since you will most likely be running a "fake" synthetic - it is NOT synthetic basestock so it prob doesnt matter. Real synthetics like: Redline or Motul 300v or Fuchs Silkolene or Pentosin may be an issue as well as energy conserving dino loaded with Friction modifiers. BTW, car mags like R&T always seem to complain about excessive oil useage on the porsche they test with factory fill synthetic. It this a prolonged brak in issue (poor ring seating) or just them flogging the test sample to death?

Mine recommends (but doesn't require) the usage of a Nissan Ester oil. So, I have been using Valvoline SynPower 5w30 since Valvoline recommends it for my application. The first oil change was done at 2,500 miles.

My oil changes have been at ~3,000 mile intervals so far, as required for severe service. Oil consumption isn't high so far, but has been at about 1/4 qt every 2500 miles. I would have expected 0 considering that this car never sees more than 2500 rpm and is driven only on short trips.

That may be why it uses oil. Did you do enough WOT during the first 500 miles? Controversial subject, but I think it does make a difference.
