I am replacing a Remington 597 22 mag that has been a real problem child. Giving a hard look at the Ruger American 22 mag. Was wondering if anyone has any experience with that rifle and can relay the reliability and accuracy of it. Thanks.

Its a great little rifle, it feels like a toy rifle compared to a centerfire rifle. I have both 22 long rifle, and 22 mag, the 22 long rifle is one of my favorite little plinkers due to ammo cost. They come with scope mounts also and use the 10/22 rotary magazine.

No, the 597 does not use the 10/22 rotary magazine.

I think he is saying the Ruger American 22 mag uses a 10/22 magazine. Seems true of the 22LR version. 10/22 were AFAIK never available in 22mag but the 77/22 is/was so it probably shares the design.
Does the American share the barrel clamping design of the 10/22 and 77/22? Those are not known for accuracy.
I know it is OT and I probably sound like a broken record, but Rimfire Bolt Action = CZ as far as I am concerned.

The problem with them was much the same as most .22 Magnum autoloaders. They had issues with stoppages and jams, because of the action cycling while under too much pressure. This resulted in a lot of split and burst cases that would tie up the guns. With some of the .22 Magnum autoloaders it became a safety issue. I believe the AMT Hardballer .22 Magnum pistol was in this category. Savage was thought to have gotten this under engineering control with their new series of autoloaders. They have incorporated some type of delayed blowback design that is supposed to work pretty well. It allows the pressure to drop off before the action cycles.

Thanks for the discussion, guys. The RAR doesn't have barrel band thing going on. It is free floating. True enough, the 597 has a stick magazine not a rotary. The RAR does have a rotary that is a bit longer than the traditional 10/22 version even though it is based on it. I was initially hoping that Ruger still had a 77 in 22 mag, but I guess they discontinued it. So am looking at the RAR 22 mag.
The RAR seems like a decently built rifle, but looks can sometimes be deceiving. How it actually performs in the real world can be something else. I have heard good things, but no real experience with it myself. The 22 mag, for me, fits a niche between 22LR and the centerfires. Good for the open areas around my property that typically shots are a bit much for the average 22LR but the centerfires are a bit of overkill. Especially on ground hogs, possums, coons, etc. I could never count on my 597 22 mag to operate reliably. So I am not really considering autoloader version again even though it is claimed that Savage has solved the problem.

What I mean by barrel clamp is that I recall the 10/22 and 77/22 had a clamp with 2 bolts that secures the barrel to the receiver using a sort of dovetail arrangement. At least when I messing around with 10/22's (quite a while ago) this was considered the limitation to 10/22 accuracy, somewhat more recently this was mentioned as a reason the 77/22 never really performed as well as the CZ 45X series.

Ok, see your point. From some obscure article I read a while back, I thought they said in it that the hammer forged barrel is friction installed and pinned to the receiver on the RAR. Haven't seen one up close to confirm.
Ruger America rimfires are great rifles with a fantastic trigger for the price range.
