I am new to this site and i was just wounder which oil is better royal purple or Castrol SYNTEC. I do my oil change every 5 thounsand miles. Is royal purple worth the extra money. i live in Michigan and my car sits out side at night.

I'm not a fan of Royal Purple. But you'll probably do fine with either for that OCI. Best thing to do is to search through these forums and read as much as you can about the two oils.

There is one version of Castrol SYNTEC that is far and above better than Royal Purple or any other version of Castrol SYNTEC. That is Castrol SYNTEC "European Formula" 0W-30. You will find it only at Autozone stores. On the back of the bottle it will indicate "Made in Germany." This is a TRUE synthetic and is great stuff!

Roy is referring to the 0W-30 version of Castrol Syntec. It is in fact made in Germany, but sold here in the US at Autozone. It's made from different basestock that the other Syntec grades.

I believe it is called, 'german' castrol, not european formula, if i am not mistaken.

Actually, only we here on BITOG call it "German Castrol" The rest of the population of the U.S and Canada know it as Castrol Syntec 0W-30. Here are pics of the latest bottle of GC (date code = "M06152...") Note the "European Formula" text on the front label:

So is Castrol Syntec oil just as good as rp. I do a lot of short driving trips to work and back it is like 3 miles. I also heard the Castrol sytec is not true synthetic.

IMHO, Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (a.k.a., "German Castrol" or "GC") is far superior to Royal Purple. GC is a "true" synthetic, unlike the rest of the Syntec line.
