To get that great Royal Purple feel in the seat of your pants new get up and go, it needs their "Synerlec" technology built in. If it has it, it is on the front of the bottle. Their API licensed oils do not have Synerlec. You would need to buy their HPS (High Performance Street) or racing line to get the Synerlec. Pretty pricey oil, but decent. You can get it off of Amazon or at Summit Racing. Some of your big parts retailers can order it in for you but the price is much higher say at O'Riley's than at Amazon.

I know that’s one my big criteria for an oil.

I paid $60 a case for Hps 5w20. That’s cheaper than walking into Walmart and grabbing a jug of Mobil 1. I haven’t used Royal purple in at least 10 yrs.

How long does it take for the purple hue to disappear?

My understanding from talking to Royal Purple directly is the color change normally happens quickly, and is dependent on heat and combustion by products. So different engines and different applications can make the color change very quickly . . . or not quickly at all. Also, if an engine was not using Royal Purple in the previous oil change, the color may change very quickly because of residual combustion by products.

The color normally changes from purple to a brownish color, then starts getting more brown as it gets "dirty."

Interestingly, the color is not affected by the oil filter (i.e., the oil filter cannot filter out the color).

I know some people like using Royal Purple in law mowers, generators, snow blowers, and other outdoor power equipment because the purple color makes it easier to see on the dipstick. These are interesting situations because those engines may not generate high heat, and may they have a lot of combustion by products.

I have no ties to the company, but thought people would appreciate knowing this since these questions seem to come up regularly with no definitive information.

Hey everyone simple enough question that will probably end up being complex. How does royal purple compare to other major players? I have spoken to their tech line before about gear oil. They were super helpful and personable. I've used their gear oil and their synchromax. I haven't used their engine oil but am curious how it compares. I've read elsewhere that it's basically Valvoline with purple dye. Is there any truth to that? Not trying to compare pricing or any of that just want to compare the actual technical performance compare to it's counter parts.

I noticed that some have availability issues with finding or getting the Royal Purple HPS engine oils. Their HPS has their "Synerlec" additive in it, the API Royal Purple sold in Walmart does not. The Royal Purple HPS oils are not API certified. The HPS 5W-30 has a HTHS of >3.7. This is a stronger film strength than many 5W-30 engine oils on the market. I have used their 5W-30 HPS off and on in the past years in different vehicles, always liked it. My problem is I change oil brands like most people change their underwear, meaning often. The HPS oils are known for cleaning and keeping clean engine internals also, really not such a big deal these days since the Valvoline Restore and Protect came along. I personally would not use their API rated oils you can get at Walmart; it costs too much for what you are getting. However, I would use the HPS version again without hesitation, though I am not using it now. On newer warranted vehicles, you also have the no API ratings issue with the HPS. The Royal Purple API rated oils and their HPS oils are ABSOLUTLY not the same oils nor do they perform the same in your engine. There isn't much love for Royal Purple here on Bitog, as is it is not a Mobil brand oil or a Boutique brand fanboy oil. I am not necessarily a Royal Purple fan, but I would and may use their HPS engine oil again someday. Now this would be for the hardcore HPS users only if you don't live around Lincoln Nebraska or Phoenix Arizona, where you could just stop in and get it. I’m using XPR 5-20 right now. Started the car in 16 degrees this morning and it was uneventful, which is good. Idle seems smoother in a clickety klak 4 banger. Yes it’s purple, Schaeffers is green. I don’t get the obsession with the color from this forum. Their Walmart oil is few dollars more than the oils beside it. Big whoop.

Any oil with a 5W winter rating would start uneventful. It’s not the brand.

I have only used RP only once in a old work van, no real opinion so I'm not the one to ask, the purple color is cool...
I am a avid user of Bel-Ray fluids in my motorcycles and is my fluid brand of choice in anything with 2 wheels. I know Royal Purple and Bel-Ray are now both owned by the same parent Company
Calumet Specialty Products Partners I have heard BR & RP called sister brands.

I wonder with both being Calumet do those oils now share any of the same DNA, the same base oils etc?
Just a thought? Question? I wonder if blended at the same plant?

I sure wish Royal Purple still made oil filters, I never tried a purple oil filter but in 2026 I am seeing some oil filter choices kinda dry up and would welcome any high end brand oil filters return to market...

The Royal Purple filter was just a Fram Endurance filter with a different paint job and a higher price so they aren’t really desirable. Especially once they started having the ruffled leaf spring issues
