Royal Purple...how does it compare?

Well before I was online and actually a year before I was aware that the internet existed, in 1995 I remember seeing one of the kids I went to school with had a souped up Fox body Mustang 5.0 with a Royal Purple sticker in the back window; he bragged that it made the car faster. This was around the time when Splitfire spark plugs and Tornado air filters were being advertised to increase horsepower by XX% GUARANTEED!
 
It did change. RP was a very robust, highly additized oil but had an older API rating to accommodate it, and people screamed "it was behind the times". Then in response, RP reformulated it to meet the latest (at that time) API rating, and haters screamed "they watered it down".

RP has never got the respect it earned and deserved. People who never used it irrationally hated it. Crazy.

The founder and his son both died within a year of each other, and the brand was sold down the river to the highest bidder. Calumet acquired them, fired 95% of their staff, and gutted everything that was unique about the brand. Performance became secondary to profit margins.
 
Profit margins drive everything lately, not just RP. Peruse the "oil filter" threads. Yes Calumet bought them out but that was irrelevant. RP was almost universally despised before and after just the same.

It's mainly hated online from what I've seen. In the car scene not so much at all.
 
I used it quite a bit back in the 2000s. It was widely used in professional motorsports back then. After the Calumet acquisition and things went downhill, a lot of that use in motorsports stopped as people were having issues with it. Pro Stock engines went from zero issues to suddenly not getting 5 passes out of an engine without eating a bearing or pin. You'll hardly find anyone using RP in professional sports anymore.

Another issue that's arose since the Calumet acquisition is problems with the dye coating engine internals. This engine had 80k miles on it at the time of this picture (a few years ago). It used RP exclusively from 20k miles at 5k mile intervals. The internals look like it pureed Barney's corpse. IIRC, it was pulled due to badly worn timing chains.

never seen this purple coating on internals,,likely some other condition caused this or just a farce, people slamming Royal Purple oil.

Same, I personally don't believe it myself. We've used Royal Purple XPR in our dirt late model race car years ago and never had a engine tear down look like that.

I've used the HMX and HPS in our vehicles and riding lawnmower. Again, nothing like posted in the above picture.

High performance: API rated off the shelf stuff
HPS: non api rated with a bunch of zddp, synerlec (their magic voodoo juice), and high viscosity
HMX: high mileage oil with synerlec
XPR: racing oil with synerlec
 
IIRC, @buster indicated in the past that it was a sulphated ester, and this is why it had the nickname "Royal Sulphur" back in the day.
sulphated denotes sulfur?

isnt sulphur in gear oil to make it more betterer?

does that correlate to hps "high"hths for say 5w30
