ROYAL PURPLE FILTERS

I personally haven't used one but I've seen the topic brought up several times and the general consensus is they are good filters but there is better options for less.

Someone on youtube or somewhere does a cutaway review. Seem to be the same as Amsoil but with a purple anti drain back valve. Internals looked good except for some excess glue.

I use 20-400 and 10-48 RP filters built like a tank and internals are unbeatable and I consider one of the best if not the best built.

Everything I have seen is they are great filters, but they want a pretty penny for them.
I personally see no reason to spend that much on one when the Fram Ultra costs less and seems just a good.

$13-15 regular price.
Where did you find Ultra's for that price, that is pretty good. I know Amazon has the XG4386 for ~$8 for my Scion, and on occasion $7. The RP 10-2840 filter is $15 on Amazon.

Depends on the PN fram XG but I just bought 6 xg8a's on eBay 3 days ago for 24$ shipped. I got 8yrs worth of filters now that I'm keeping inside the house for temp control and moisture purposes but hey I had to buy them at that price.

eBay ... The prices are all over the place so I check about once a week.
These cover my Ecoboost and GM V8 ... Also got a bunch of Hengst filters for the Cruze ...

Definitely true that's why u gotta jump on it when you do see a deal on eBay.
Regardless I mean fram XG are solid and proven and at half the cost then RP in most cases you can't go wrong.

...Oil filter study

This filter comparison has been posted many times here and discredited as unreliable based on the several points. Listed below are some.

The patch results (what he calls the 30um filtering) ranking are the basis for the whole test. Filters with the same media like the Wix and Napa Gold, also Extra Guard and High Mileage show a discrepancy/difference in results. And as also noted in prior discussions, some results also are in conflict with published ISO test results, eg., Classic scoring higher than P1.

Also results show the Fram 'Defense' value tier line finishing higher than other Fram filters except the XG/Ultra. Again in direct conflict with ISO test rating.

That said, doesn't mean that the RP filter or other synthetic filters like the Ultra don't have excellent efficiency, just that the GMC comparison doesn't prove it. The results of his basement patch testing seem more subjective than scientific. Dissection pictures are excellent though.

RP is good synthetic filter, very similar to the Amsoil filter made by same company. As noted by others, price likely higher when compared to an Ultra.

Napa Gold, Wix or Baldwin are just as good quality at a better price.

I prefer the coil spring models vs. the thin metal leaf like spring personally, more robust design.

I thought I once heard Royal Purple filters were made by Champion Laboratories just re-branded.

I thought Champ Labs went bankrupt. Maybe just more false info. on the internet. Maybe bankrupt means business as usual just don't pay the creditors.
