As a bit of an Aus winter project I'm giving some love to my Pa's 27yr 'Rover Colt' ride on mower with a Briggs 8hp.
He hasn't been with us for some time now and the mower (which he taught me to use when I was young and annoying) is just sitting out at Mum and Dad's shed not doing much,
So I thought, well who doesn't love spending money on a sentimental project!!
The engine has good compression and actually runs quite smooth (for a Briggs) and the deck used to cut pretty well, so hopefully it won't need much work.
In the past it was a great back-up to the shiny new Husqvarna that Dad bought a couple of years back (especially for the rough areas down the back of the block where the husky might get scratched lol)
But we've been having issues with belts and bearings, so it hasn't seen much action lately...
I've ordered some bits and pieces, but 1st up you'll see the cool gunk-fest that I found when splitting the case on the gearbox.
The gears actually look to be in really good shape, so this should be a simple/messy clean and re-grease, hopefully not stuffing up the re-assembly!
Do I still use a Bentone based grease like this Castrol stuff? https://www.castrol.com/en_au/australia/products/cars/greases/spheerol-htb2.html
