Got a 5 year old linksys router. Last night, wifes dell latitudes internet wouldn't pull up. Unplugged and restart and did all those things, nothing. The laptop is windows XP. The router would not send the IP address to the laptop. Wifi worked, full signal....the dell was reading the signal and hardware diagnostic showed no problems with any internal stuff inside the Dell. Now, my daughters Compaq has windows 7, router works fine. Both our smartphones pick up the wifi and they work fine. It's strictly the Dell. The ipad works fine. What's the deal??? We have not downloaded Service Pack 3 for XP. Is that the problem?

Try manually assigning an IP address to the Dell machine's wireless network interface. If that works, then I'd suspect a DHCP issue with the Dell. My Computer -> Manage -> Services and see if the DHCP service is running.

On your XP computer try the following:

Start... Run... cmd, press Enter.

When the black text screen appears, type:

ipconfig /release and press Enter

ipconfig /renew and press Enter

Also, does the Internet work on the Dell if you connect it to the router by wire? If so, your Dell wireless adapter may be hosed, although that's somewhat unlikely.

Plug in an ethernet cable into the laptop from the set of ports on the back of router to see if any networking is working on your laptop.

Sometimes software firewalls can cause these type of issues.

At least it will narrow down the issue.

So it is isolated to the Dell's wifi. Try uninstall and reinstall the driver (go to Device Manager to remove the wifi adapter and reboot, let it auto detect and install the driver again). If it still doesn't work, maybe it is time to get a new USB/Express Card/Card Bus wireless adapter?
