How long can I go between OC using Rotella T synthetic 5w-40 oil and Mobil 1 extended performance filter ?

I talked to a couple of people they said 10,000 miles

Its a Dodge minivan 3.8L only used locally, maybe a 2000 mile trip on the highway. My mileage is 31,000

I always did the 3,000 mile and filter thing at fiffy lube, now I want to start doing it myself with the good stuff

Think I might trade in the 5-40 for a 5w30 synthetic (maybe M1, Pennzoil Platinum, etc.).

I dont doubt that the rotella could hold up for that long, I just think the 5w-40 may be a little thick when you are doing the short trips around town.

I also, would not push it to 10,000 miles until you have a used oil analysis.

Suggest you have a used oil analysis at 5,000 to establish your baseline and go from there.

Good luck

my 2 cents

RTS is a fantastic oil. It is very robust in its add pack. I would go 7K to 8K easily and get a used oil analysis done to see if it can go further.

The oil will hold up just fine under most apparent standards. I did two back to back 13 month/9.5k+/- OCIs in my jeep. The TBN was fine ..the visc was fine (in spite of fuel). My numbers were somewhat high by BITOG standards ..but nothing to be alarmed about. The TAN was higher than the preferred limits and it was determined to be the source of most of the high metals (in addition to the fuel issues).

While it will surely go the distance, the churning of a 5w-40 in short trip usage will probably take some toll in the fuel economy end of things.

If I were to do this again, it would probably be with HDD or any of the other Xw-30 weight Amsoil offerings. Actually, I'd probably do it with a 20 grade.

You termed your primary usage as "locally" ..but does that mean truly short trips, or urban driving? The difference is one spends a bigger share at hot oil condition.

If you want to get advanced, have them upgrade your mini to the HD towing package. They can put on a heat exchanger that will warm the oil faster and, more or less, fix the temp within a few degrees of the coolant temp. It reduces oil warm up time by about 30% (or more).

I used to run 10000m oci in our 3.3 '02 T&C minivan. during extended commutes (25k per year), Mobil 1 10w30 was fine. 5w30 would thin up too much over 10k.

We moved and annual mileage went to ~14k. I couldn't get Mobil 1 10w30 to last beyond 6k before the startup clatter was just too much to tolerate.

All OCIs had Purolator Pure One filters.

Those motors run a t-chain which can place added wear on oils, and that iron block never gets too warmed up for short-driven errands. I think you're going to need to experiment, do uoa, etc, rather than just picking an oil and shooting for a number.

BTW- that engine is so smooth, and generally well-built that I'd hate to put a 40wt in it. A 10-30 or 0-30GC would be nice IMO.

I want to thank everyone for their answers, Gary, I'm going to do a used oil analysis when it gets to 7,000 to check on how its going. I love the 3.8L perfect power match for the car and smooth.
