Would it be safe to run 5w40 in a high mileage 5.3, pushing 220k right now..reason i ask is cause a friend bought it and decided he didn't wana use it! Winter in texas is just around the corner and I didn't want it to be to thick!

I switched to a wix filter and it stoped for now. Will never use a fram filter again! Well free oil is free oil! Not gonna turn that down.

Rotella works in higher mileage engines well
Has it EVER had synthetic in it? I'd just run some 5W30/10W30 high mileage conventional oil. 10W40 if you want to go a bit thicker. 15W40 if you want a heavy duty engine oil. Its wouldn't dump a synthetic in it unless it has ran synthetic for most of its life.

5W is pretty thin cold. 40 is great when hot with that many miles. Not to worry. It's the ideal oil for that motor at that point in its life
Yes, absolutely fine to run and I'd actually recommend it if you're getting it for free. The 5w is the cold rating and it's the universal "all temps" rating when you look at all owners manuals. The 40 is the hot rating and I agree with BrocLuno that it's the ideal choice for your high mileage motor.

These are full roller motors and they really dont need nothing more than a 5W30, even the high mileage ones.
I'd put Valvoline MaxLife 5w30 in it and be done with it.

You wont ever see temperatures in Texas where T6 will be too thick cold. It may not be good for your catalytic converters, but, if you don't care about that, use away! It's a great oil, I absolutely love it in my diesel and my ATV's since it's wet clutch compatible and carries the JASO-MA rating. No need to buy expensive motorcycle oil when there's T6!
Remember it is only bad for the catalytic converters if you burn alot.

If I can use a 5w-40 in a Saskatchewan winter, you sure as heck can use it in Texas.
