Rotella T Triple Protection formulation change?

I know they reduced Calcium and added Magnesium a while back but it appears they have now swapped Boron for Moly. Its also possible the truck got the wrong oil (Mobil Delvac 1300?).

This is actually from a UOA and may contain up to 20% old formula (10% remains in cooler and 10% add oil from bottle).

46 - Molybdenum

12 - Boron

1064 - Magnesium

1088 - Calcium

1106 - Phosphorous

1360 - Zinc

Any thoughts?

Its supposed to be Rotella T Triple Protection. It used to show 4-5 times that amount of Boron and no Moly.

My thought is thats either 20% Rotella T TP (Oil Cooler + Add Oil) of the previous formula + 80% new formula or an unknown oil. The oil came out of the bulk tank from my usual source.

I guess Im looking on input on whether Shell has replaced the Boron with Moly.

PS TBN was 5.26 after 22,500 miles and wear numbers were in the 0-2 ppm range (excepting iron) so whatever it is did the job.

The new stuff came from a bulk Tank? In my expierence Bulk oil is usually weaker additive wise then what you get in the bottle. Even with all of the oil changes we do I still have cases delivered.

Question: Just picked up 3 jugs of SRT 15w40 and they all have the same date on the bottom of 6 July 2011. Would you know if this is the manufactured date of the oil or the date they bottled it?

Yes its out of a bulk tank. When each oil change takes 10 gallons the jugs are a bit of a pain.

However additive wise it doesnt change the fact that the Moly came from somewhere.

To the best of my knowledge thats the bottling date.

Its the same source Ive been using for oil for the last 2 years and he says it came from the Shell Truck just like always. Im trying to figure out if its a revised formulation or a different oil. In the past Shell has had more Boron and no Moly. It is bulk oil and thats what has me concerned as to the actual identity. The truck holds 40 quarts.

As I stated considering the oil that stayed in the oil cooler and 1 gallon add oil it looks like the oil put in the truck started with 60-80 Moly and no Boron. Otherwise it looks similar to recent Rotella T TP.

I think I may visit the distributor this week and see if I can get a virgin sample to see if I can figure out exactly whats going on.

No formulation change. Shell says it is either not Rotella or a mix of Rotella and a Shell PCMO.

Im going to send off a virgin sample and see if I get the same results.

That looks just like Delvac - XOM is using a Ca/Mg detergent mix in a lot of their oils now, especially the HD ones.
