Rotary tool

Been looking through some little stuff I need to do, and I think that I need to add a rotary tool to my collection. I have the big corded and cordless drills, but I need something smaller, like a dremel/rotozip. Don't know anything as far as reliability, power, and accessories, so I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions.

Lots of choices now days. I used to own a Dremel years back.

Lots of cheap kits out there too. I can't say what is best though. I was given a cheap kit for a gift. It's OK.....I don't expect it to last a real long time though.

You will get better advice if you describe your potential projects. There is a range of sizes - probably the largest is a die grinder, smallest is Dremel, with a Foredom flex shaft unit in the middle.

The Foredom is probably the most versatile. If you need the Rotozip for carpentry projects you could add the flex shaft for garage projects and end up with something like the Foredom. Whichever you end up with, you might find it valuable to have the speed control feature.

porting or polishing, with some wood work. Mostly metal and wood Car or home projects. I have a big drill that I could I guess use as a die grinder, so I am looking for something that I can move around

I have Craftsman's rotary tool. It's great for porting and such. Pretty cheap too.

Foredom makes the best flex shaft units but $$$.

I had a Craftsman flex shaft given to me as a gift years ago but the flex shaft gave out after not much use.

I've used corded and cordless dremels and the corded is alot more powerful with more rpm's. And the available flex extension would be ideal for porting and polishing also.

Been using the same plain bearing Dremel for over 25 years now, just needs to be oiled on a regular basis. For heavier work consider a pneumatic die grinder, but also be ready for lots of small, sharp pieces of metal everywhere so be careful.
