Rock came flying out of nowhere (I was a few hundred feet behind the next vehicle), and smacked the glass on my 91 318i.

Does this look repairable? It is about a half-dollar from tip to tip on the spidering. The bullseye is about the size of a dime or nickel.

This is the original Sekurit saint-Gibson glass, and is dirty but not terribly pitted.

Given the apparent difficulty in finding first world glass (glass not made in china or Mexico, I'll use a used windshield before that), I hope it can be repaired. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Looks like it is going to spread, you can try having epoxy injected into it before replacing the glass. Also keep a window slighty open when you park the car, especially in this heat. Good luck!

Apparently the E30 is about as simple to replace glass in as any windsheld can be. It is less than a 30 minute job and the seals and everything are reusable...

What does the resin cost, $50? I wonder if it is worth it to chance it since I can get new glass for around $300 installed.

Just need to make sure I find the right glass.

If you have full glass coverage the insurance company might opt injecting the resin first at no cost to you. Honestly that would bother the [censored] out of me, and I'd probably have the glass replaced for ~$300 as you mentioned.

I had two instances where trucks on the LIE were missing a mud flap kick up a rock and bang! Both times I had a passenger with a cell camera take a picture of the missing flap. We got a phone # off the side of the truck and they ended up paying for the new glass since two of my rides don't have glass coverage.

Once it spiders like that,I don't think it's repairable.
Let us know how it goes if try a fix.

It is right smack (literally) in the center of the windshield.

My biggest issue is that Im due for safety inspection... and this wont pass.

There was a time a glass repair in a line of sight would be illegal and wouldn't be repaired by a glass shop.
Don't know if that's the case anymore.

News reports confirmed there was an irate person in a wheelchair on the over pass tossing stones onto the highway.

In Michigan, there is a stipulation with our insurance companies that requires all damaged windshields to be replaced through the insurance with no deductible. I guess its an effort to help motorists stay safe?

I agree with others about it not being repairable due to the cracks expanding.

Get the windshield replaced.

They will come to your place of business or home, etc., and replace it.

If you have full coverage insurance will cover most or all of the replacement cost.

That's still the case in West Virginia.

I've had very good luck with having that type of chip repaired. But if you wait until the cracks start to grow, forget it. In other words, fix it NOW or it'll be too late. If it doesn't work, you're only out a few bucks.

And I sure hear you on the 3rd-world glass we're getting these days. OEM glass is getting wavy enough, and the aftermarket is worse. In contrast, I recently had the windshield in my '66 Dodge replaced with a piece of new-old-stock that had probably been sitting on a warehouse shelf for 20 years. Its a thing of beauty, not a wave or ripple in it. Made me realize just how BAD most windshield glass really is today.

Sadly as someone who has had hundreds of rock chips (and in my 1996 Chevy truck had ELEVEN windshields replaced in 3 years when they redid I-15 for the 2002 Olympics) like Colt said once it spiders like that (much past 1/8-1/4" from the hit point) a repair will prob not work.

My current Corolla windshield has 7 rock chips in it. Doubt it will pass safety this next month.

Good luck! Bill

Funny that a piece of NOS glass for a 66 is better than the new stuff. Is it laminated and safety glass and all the same stuff?

Maybe I should get in the business of adapters to put old glass in new cars... I hate waviness.

They can do a pretty good fix.
From decent to very good.

Probably worth a chance for $50.
And double check your insurance - they may pop for a new windscreen.

Oh heck yes, its laminated safety glass. I don't know exactly when the cut-in date for safety glass was, but my 1949 coupe had it too.

go to your local parts store and pick some $10 permatex windshield repair kit. I've use it numerous times with no complaints.

from the look of it, it can be fix easy. Few year ago this guy came to our shop asking peoples who need windshield fix, 15 dollar each car 2 for 20, he fix my dad crack and mind, we both look worth then your crack. He fix it and it look gone. you still can see it very little bit, but no air support to get thru, I kept his number and call him any time I need a rock fix or crack fix.

I used Superglass, which is a franchise company. There was one guy who serviced the whole area so I gave him a call. He was friendly and knowledgeable. Went to work on it and it looks great. I was surprised that he took a dremel to it first, but I guess that's how it works. Took his time and got it deep in. Looks great.

Superglass is a good outfit. I was surprised when I called safelite and they told me it would be $129!!!
