RL advises that additional limited slip friction modifier is not usually needed with their GL5 gear oil (not the "NS" GL5 gear oils they make). I've run RL several times in Mopar cone clutch (Borg Warner / Auburn type) and a couple differed friction plate units, and all had typical shudder in turns with RL and needed friction modifier. All these cars had big / sticky tires and slow ratios, so the torque was pretty high thru the spider nest, so that may have been part of it.

Whats people heres experiences with RL in LS diffs?

With Mobil 1, Amsoil, and Redline, I needed additional LSD additive for some tight LSDs. Nothing new. Dose as needed even if already premixed. Premixed LSD additive is usually on the light side.

Yes, I had to add one 4 oz. bottle of the Motorcraft XL-3 to my LS additive already in it RL 75W-140, in an Eaton carbon fiber clutchpack Posi with ~100K miles on it.

This was after already adding a 4oz. bottle of RL's own LS additive at the time of the 2 qt. gear oil change!!

So from now on I go right with the XL-3 stuff from the get go!!

Some LSDs in light duty conditions with average civilian drivers can use over the counter lubes with no problems.
Enthusiasts almost always need to add special sauce.
So needing to add some is no cause for concern about your diff or the original product.

In my '88 Supra with the stock clutch LSD, I found that the regular Redline oil has too much slip additive already in it. With too much slip, it pretty basically kills the LSD. So, I run 1qt of NS and top it off with about 1/2qt of the regular. It's quiet and smooth but still grabs.

Just remember that it's easy to add slip by putting in more additive. If you have too much slip, you have to drain all the oil and start over.
