This Rislone Winter Start got my attention as I haven’t run across this type of cold weather oil additive, although others may be out there.

If I’m reading the MSDS correctly, this product is 60% adipate ester and 25% light naphthenic oil.

Per the Hatco site, adipate esters run 2.5-5.5 cSt and have pour points down to -60C.

The naphthenic base oils are low in wax content & high in solvency.

To me, it seems the best use for this product would be during very cold weather, as an add 1/2 way thru a dino OCI, to bolster the depleted pour point depressants.

But my question is, considering the ester & naphthenic mix, what is the effect on seal swell?
 
As Bruce stated, the acrylic copolymer could be a PPD or a VII.

However, it could also be a defoamer since no PDS defoamers are mentioned. Since we do not know the exact form of the copolymer, who knows.

The isodecyl adipic ester is most likely being used as the PPD and the friction modifer, with the naphthenics being used as solvents for the supplemental additives. Both ester and naphthenics are good solvents.
 
I had some of that Rislone Winter Start stuff, but I wonder if you would be better off with a half quart of Redline in the crankcase, since we know it must be about 50% ester.
 
Different type of ester in RL.

Most PCMO oils have some type of PPD whether it be an ester, etc. Remember, some components are "multi-functional" and do more than one thing.

Unless you have some specific engine problem or are using a sub-standard oil, most third party additives are not needed.
 
The Acrylic Polymer most likely would be a pour point depresant with or with out VII properties.

In a multi grade oil only .2-.3%wt of PPD is needed to formluate a muilti grade mineral oil.

The ester and Napthentic oil would offer low temp fluidity and some seal swell on top of the PPD so this product will reduce PP and CCS. Also they will add very good sludge dispersing.

Looks like a "motor" oil package also is included to not dilute the motor oil I guess.

Not a bad design I think It will function as stated but this would be used for straight weight oils or real bad Multi grades.

In other words if the corect grade oil is used in the first place you do not need this stuff.

I now have a better understanding of the function of the ester, the acrylic polymer & the naphthenic carrier oil.

Typically these items are buried in the "proprietary" portion of a MSDS, for a finished PCMO, and we seldom get a chance to actually view this type of non-metallic additive.

And TallPaul is the Bitog equivalent of Will Rogers. He's never met a motor oil additive that he didn't like!

I know this is an older post, but I'm wondering if someone knows how much this additive would change the grade of a multigrade motor oil - ie, would it turn a 5w30 into a 0W-30?
