Right Oil???

I noticed that Castrol makes hypoind gear oil that says nothing about differentials on it but says for use in manual transmissions. It has ZERO friction modifier additve in it and that got me thinking.

Most of the good brand name gear oils are formlated to include FM for LSD (limited slip diffs). There are a few that specifically say they are not for LSD, but most do. As you know, many manual transmissions and other gear boxes call for gear oil (such as 75w90, etc.).

The fact that Castrol's premium dino gear oil hypo-c (or something like that) only spoke of manual transmissions and not rear diffs and the fact it has no FM additive in it makes me think that when using gear oil in a manual transmission application, it is better to NOT use many of the more popular choices for rear diffs because they are all formualted for posi and maybe the FM additive is not good in anything else than a hypoid diff.

Otherwise why would Castrol dino 80w90 not have LSD additive?

I was buying gear oil for my front diff and I got the Valvoline conventional instead but I wanted to buy the Castrol but it seemed like it was specifically made for manual transmissions and not diffs.

A hypoid gear is a spiral bevel gear as used in vehicle differentials. If it says hypoid gear oil, it is a differential oil that can be used in transmissions.

What Castrol gear oil is that? I know of their Syngear, AP gear, ans ESGL gear oils.

In my Toyota, which is the only manual transmission vehicle that I now have, I use Amsoil Severe Gear in the differential and transmission. Before I discovered Amsiol I used Mobil 1 gear oil, before that, going back to the beginning, I used Castrol.

Scratching my head, and reading better, you are likely speaking of Castrol Hypoy-C. Hypoy-C is recommended for rear differentials, including limited slip, and non synchro heavy duty transmissions.

Yes you are correct...I read the bottle lable at the store and I did not remember seeing anything that indicated it had the LSD additive in it...

I think he had FM and LS additives confused.
