I need to change the oil on my Dad's 42 inch Sears Craftsman riding lawn mower.

Got an Fram 3600 filter, and half a quart of NAPA full synthetic 5w30.

How much more oil do you think I will need?
My guess is with that long filter 2 quarts...

(NAPA has oil on sale for $3.79...)

Any helpful suggestions or hints you can give me?

Many thanks...

Check the manual. I think 1/2 qt is way too little.

My Ariens 42" with a Briggs V-twin and their filter takes 64oz (2 qts).

Other than that, if it has that quick release thingy on the drain plug, check it. Mine was loose and I started to unthread it and then the plastic popped off when I pulled on it! Ended up making more of a mess than usual.

I used the 10w30 Napa syn in my riding mower. Takes maybe half a quart but its just a single Cyl and I change the filter every other year.

My mower is similar with a 31 series B&S engine and it takes 1 qt + 1/4 (40 oz total) and the manual states 48 oz. I also use the long version filter, there is a 2-oz difference from the short to long filter in my experience.

Rule of thumb, most consumer riding mowers take 1.5 quarts. Commercial mowers take about 2 quarts on average and push mowers take about half a quart. Generally speaking.

Yep. 1.5 quarts would be more like it. I've got a Sears LT2000 42" with 18hp Briggs single.

Changed the oil and filter today.

Putolator 20195 (Fram 3600) filter, and 2.25 quarts oil.

Longer filter required more oil.

I stopped by Lowes and got a longer tube (two foot) to drain the oil, cost me 90 cents...

I wonder of the Purolator 30001 (Fram 8A) would fit on your mower.

I can't imagine. Large diesels like this have always interested me though. On our last family cruise, we took a tour of the ship on the last day at sea. We didnt get to see the "engine" room, but we got to see the engine control room. I cant imagine the hours these things see. I wasnt a BITOG'r at the time or else I would have asked what oil (and how much) they used.
