I'm still having trouble with the concept of running 5W30 year round as I thought 10W30 is supposed to provide better protection in the summer and as I said before I think this 5W30 is burning off more easily due to smelling oil when I ran the defroster the other day.
The hot viscosity of 5w30 is basically the same as 10w30. It's just the cold temperature viscosity that is different - ie, the 5W or 10W part of the rating.
As others have said, 5w30 covers a very large ambient temperature operating range. Not sure what your owner's manual says for oil weight vs. ambient temperatures, but most OMs have that info listed.
